Mandarin for adult beginners
You do not need to be a child or attend a school to use Mandarin Meadow. Adults can follow the same language foundations, then adapt the examples to family, work, travel or everyday conversation.
Choose by what you can already do
If Mandarin is new to you, begin with Course 1 and keep pinyin and English visible. Familiar family and school scenes introduce short, reusable patterns; the course numbers describe a language sequence, not your age. If you can already manage simple exchanges, read the prerequisites on Course 5 before choosing a lesson.
Try one useful greeting
Open the greetings sample lesson. Choose 你好, 早上好 and 再见. Read their meanings, listen to a model when useful, and record one short item. Compare plays the model followed by your voice; use it to notice one feature to practise again.
A short first session
- Meet two or three expressions rather than trying to memorise an entire lesson.
- Say a model in a situation relevant to you. Change the person or object where the pattern allows.
- Record, listen and try again if you want to adjust the tone or rhythm.
- On another day, recall the expression before opening the support.
For example, the family lesson introduces 这是我… — “This is my…”. Use the lesson’s family words to introduce someone you know. A small model used in context is a practical starting point.
Read more when the language fits
Later courses include everyday decisions, science, history, stories and literature. Ordering a shared meal is a supported reading example from Course 9, not a beginner placement test. Open its course prerequisites first and move earlier if you need more language support. Longer readings can be spread across their suggested parts.
Keep practice and mastery separate
Completed tasks record what you practised. A recorded tick is not a pronunciation score, and written reflections are not automatically graded. Return to an expression later without looking at the model to see what you remember. Voice clips stay in the current browser tab; progress backups do not include them.
