Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

The wolf's unfair excuses

Use 上游 and 下游 to explain water direction.

Goals & study plan
The wolf's unfair excuses

Read the wolf’s claims beside the lamb’s evidence. 上游 and 下游 establish the water’s direction; notice that clear facts do not make the wolf stop bullying. You can pause after any study block and continue later.

  • Use 上游 and 下游 to explain water direction.
  • Compare an accusation with evidence from the story.
  • Distinguish a reasoned explanation from a pretext.

狼和小羊

狼和小羊在河边喝水,狼站在上游,小羊站在下游。

láng hé xiǎo yáng zài hé biān hē shuǐ, láng zhàn zài shàng yóu, xiǎo yáng zhàn zài xià yóu。

A wolf and a lamb drink beside a river, with the wolf upstream and the lamb downstream.

狼想欺负小羊,却先找借口,说小羊把自己喝的水弄脏了。

láng xiǎng qī fu xiǎo yáng, què xiān zhǎo jiè kǒu, shuō xiǎo yáng bǎ zì jǐ hē de shuǐ nòng zāng le。

Wanting to mistreat the lamb, the wolf first invents a pretext and says the lamb has dirtied its drinking water.

小羊解释,河水从狼那里流向自己,自己不可能弄脏上游的水。

xiǎo yáng jiě shì, hé shuǐ cóng láng nà lǐ liú xiàng zì jǐ, zì jǐ bù kě néng nòng zāng shàng yóu de shuǐ。

The lamb explains that the water flows from the wolf towards it, so it cannot dirty the water upstream.

小羊指着河水说:“水是从你那边流过来的,请你看看。”狼瞪大眼睛,却连看也不看,继续向小羊逼近。

xiǎo yáng zhǐ zhe hé shuǐ shuō:“shuǐ shì cóng nǐ nà biān liú guò lái de, qǐng nǐ kàn kan。” láng dèng dà yǎn jīng, què lián kàn yě bù kàn, jì xù xiàng xiǎo yáng bī jìn。

The lamb pointed to the river. “The water flows from your side. Please look.” The wolf glared and advanced without looking.

狼没有认真听这个理由,又说小羊以前讲过自己的坏话。

láng méi yǒu rèn zhēn tīng zhè ge lǐ yóu, yòu shuō xiǎo yáng yǐ qián jiǎng guò zì jǐ de huài huà。

Ignoring that reasoning, the wolf then claims that the lamb spoke badly of it before.

小羊指出,狼说的那个时候,自己还没有出生,怎么会做过那件事呢?

xiǎo yáng zhǐ chū, láng shuō de nà ge shí hou, zì jǐ hái méi yǒu chū shēng, zěn me huì zuò guò nà jiàn shì ne?

The lamb points out that it had not been born at the time the wolf describes, so how could it have done that?

两个借口都和事实不符,狼却仍不肯承认自己说错了。

liǎng gè jiè kǒu dōu hé shì shí bù fú, láng què réng bù kěn chéng rèn zì jǐ shuō cuò le。

Both excuses conflict with the facts, but the wolf still refuses to admit that it is wrong.

狼喊道:“不是你,就是你的家人!反正我不会放过你。”话音未落,它就向小羊扑了过去。

láng hǎn dào:“bú shì nǐ, jiù shì nǐ de jiā rén! fǎn zhèng wǒ bú huì fàng guò nǐ。” huà yīn wèi luò, tā jiù xiàng xiǎo yáng pū le guò qù。

“If it was not you, it was your family! I will not spare you anyway!” cried the wolf, springing at the lamb before its words had faded.

小羊还想开口解释,狼却已经张开了嘴。河水仍从上游流向下游,刚才的争辩再也没有继续。

xiǎo yáng hái xiǎng kāi kǒu jiě shì, láng què yǐ jīng zhāng kāi le zuǐ。 hé shuǐ réng cóng shàng yóu liú xiàng xià yóu, gāng cái de zhēng biàn zài yě méi yǒu jì xù。

The lamb tried to explain again, but the wolf had already opened its jaws. The river still flowed downstream, and their argument ended.
