Help & FAQ

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

A newly written version of a Chinese folk legend.

bā wèi shén xiān cān jiā wán yàn huì, lái dào dōng hǎi àn biān。 hǎi miàn kuān kuò, làng huā yì céng céng xiàng yuǎn chù fān qù。 lǚ dòng bīn wàng zhe hǎi shuō:“jīn tiān bù yòng yún, dà jiā gè ná zì jǐ de bǎo wù guò hǎi, kàn kan shuí yǒu shén me bàn fǎ!”

The Eight Immortals came to the shore of the Eastern Sea after a feast. Waves rolled into the distance. “Today let us leave the clouds aside,” said Lü Dongbin. “Let each of us use a treasure to cross the sea!”

tiě guǎi lǐ bǎ guǎi zhàng pāo dào shuǐ miàn, guǎi zhàng fú qǐ lai, tā biàn wěn wěn zhàn shàng qù。 hàn zhōng lí zhǎn kāi dà shàn zi, zuò zài shàn miàn shàng, xiàng zuò zhe yì tiáo xiǎo chuán。 zhāng guǒ lǎo qǔ chū zì jǐ de bǎo wù, yě gēn zhe xiàng hǎi zhōng qián jìn。

Tieguai Li threw his crutch onto the water and stood on it as it floated. Han Zhongli unfolded a large fan and sat on it like a boat. Zhang Guolao brought out his treasure and followed them onto the sea.

hé xiān gū de hé huā tiē zhe bō làng piāo dòng, hán xiāng zi de dòng xiāo fā chū qīng liàng de shēng yīn, lǚ dòng bīn、 cáo guó jiù hé lán cǎi hé yě gè shī běn lǐng。 hǎi miàn shàng yí huì er chū xiàn huā, yí huì er shǎn qǐ guāng, bǎ yuán lái píng jìng de shuǐ miàn biàn de rè nào qǐ lai。

He Xiangu's lotus floated on the waves, Han Xiangzi's flute rang clearly, and Lü Dongbin, Cao Guojiu and Lan Caihe each used their powers. Flowers and flashes of light enlivened the sea.

zhè xiē guāng hé shēng yīn jīng dòng le lóng gōng。 lóng wáng pài rén chū lái chá kàn, fā xiàn bā xiān zhèng zài guò hǎi, biàn rèn wéi tā men rǎo luàn le hǎi shàng de zhì xù。 lán cǎi hé de bǎo wù yóu qí yǐn rén zhù yì, lóng gōng de rén shēn shǒu qiǎng zǒu, dài jìn le hǎi dǐ。

The sights and sounds disturbed the dragon palace. The Dragon King sent attendants to investigate and considered the immortals a disturbance. Lan Caihe's treasure attracted particular attention and was seized and taken underwater.

lán cǎi hé shī le yī tuō, huǒ bàn men lì kè tíng xià lai。 tiě guǎi lǐ lái dào hǎi biān hǎn:“kuài bǎ bǎo wù hái huí lái!” lóng wáng bù kěn, hǎi shuǐ hū rán fān qǐ dà làng, bǎ bā xiān zhī jiān de jù lí lā kāi。

Without his support, Lan Caihe needed help and the others stopped. “Return the treasure!” shouted Tieguai Li. The Dragon King refused, and great waves rose between the immortals.

hàn zhōng lí yáo dòng shàn zi, yā zhù yíng miàn ér lái de làng; lǚ dòng bīn xiàng qián dǐ dǎng, hé xiān gū jiē yìng tóng bàn。 gāng cái gè zì guò hǎi de bā gè rén, zhè shí jù zài yì qǐ, lún liú bāng zhù, bù zài zhǐ kàn zì jǐ de qián fāng。

Han Zhongli waved his fan against the oncoming waves, Lü Dongbin faced the attack and He Xiangu helped their companion. The eight who had travelled separately now worked together.

lóng wáng yòu zhāo lái bāng shǒu, hǎi miàn shàng yún qì fān yǒng。 bā xiān méi yǒu tuì sàn, yí miàn dǎng zhù làng tāo, yí miàn zhuī wèn lán cǎi hé bǎo wù de qù chù。 zhēng zhí yuè lái yuè dà, lián yuǎn chù de shén xiān yě tīng jiàn le xiāo xī。

The Dragon King called for help, and clouds churned above the water. The immortals stayed together, resisting the waves and demanding news of the treasure. The growing quarrel drew the attention of other immortals.

hòu lái, yǒu rén qián lái tiáo jiě, qǐng shuāng fāng tíng shǒu。 lóng wáng zhōng yú bǎ bǎo wù jiāo huán, lán cǎi hé chóng xīn huí dào huǒ bàn shēn biān。 tiě guǎi lǐ kàn kan dà jiā, shǔ le shǔ rén shù, cái fàng xià xīn lái。

Eventually a mediator asked both sides to stop. The Dragon King returned the treasure, and Lan Caihe rejoined his companions. Tieguai Li counted them all before relaxing.

fēng jiàn jiàn xiǎo le, hǎi miàn yòu xiǎn chū yí dào dào xì làng。 bā xiān zhěng lǐ hǎo gè zì de bǎo wù, jì xù xiàng duì àn qián jìn。 hé huā、 shàn zi hé guǎi zhàng zài shuǐ miàn liú xià bù tóng de hén jì, bā gè rén què xiàng zhe tóng yí ge fāng xiàng。

The wind eased and smaller ripples returned. The immortals gathered their treasures and continued. Lotus, fan and crutch left different trails, but all eight moved towards the same shore.

tài yáng xiàng xī xié shí, tā men zhōng yú shàng àn。 lán cǎi hé huí tóu wàng zhe yǐ jīng ān jìng de hǎi, xiàng bāng zhù zì jǐ de huǒ bàn dào xiè。 hǎi shàng de làng huā hái zài fān dòng, bā xiān de jiǎo bù què yǐ jīng yì qǐ tà shàng le lù dì。

As the sun lowered, they reached land. Lan Caihe looked back at the quiet sea and thanked his companions. Waves still moved behind them, while their footsteps now travelled together on shore.

shàng àn de dì fang yǒu jǐ kuài píng tǎn de dà shí。 dà jiā zuò xià lai xiū xi, zhěng lǐ bèi hǎi shuǐ dǎ shī de yī xiù。 hán xiāng zi chuī qǐ dòng xiāo, qīng liàng de shēng yīn yǔ hǎi shàng de làng shēng xiāng jiē, zhè yí cì, què méi yǒu zài jīng dòng lóng gōng。

On flat rocks by the shore, they rested and dried their sleeves. Han Xiangzi's flute joined the sound of the waves without disturbing the palace again.
