A sound foundation alongside Course 1
Start here if pinyin is new to you, or choose a lesson for a sound you want to practise. Every lesson is open: you do not have to finish this course before learning Chinese words.
Listen to Mandarin syllables and words, learn how to blend them, answer six short review questions, and record two examples. Compare plays the model followed by your voice; it does not assess pronunciation.
Your practice progress will appear here.
Progress is separate from Mandarin lesson progress and belongs to the selected learner on this browser. Voice clips are temporary.
Use initials, finals and tones together in words and a greeting.

Teaching references & audio
The explanations are original course material. Spelling and connected-tone rules were checked against Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s pronunciation resources.
Syllables and words use the original course voice. The 35 simple, compound and nasal final recordings use the supplied pinyin audio. Recording completion does not assess pronunciation.
