Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

A basketball match: more than the final score

Look beyond who scores. Follow the change from an isolated shot to a pass into space; the ending gives the score difference, not the full score. You can pause after any study block and continue later.

  • Describe passing, defence and teamwork.
  • Use a specific example to evaluate cooperation.
  • Compare the result with what the team improved.

一场篮球赛

周五下午,学校举行篮球比赛。小安所在的队先讨论分工,教练提醒他们,不要只看谁投进了球,还要注意队员之间的配合。

zhōu wǔ xià wǔ, xué xiào jǔ xíng lán qiú bǐ sài。 xiǎo ān suǒ zài de duì xiān tǎo lùn fēn gōng, jiào liàn tí xǐng tā men, bú yào zhǐ kàn shuí tóu jìn le qiú, hái yào zhù yì duì yuán zhī jiān de pèi hé。

Before Friday’s basketball match, Xiao An’s team discusses roles; the coach asks them to notice cooperation as well as who scores.

比赛开始,小安拿到球就想自己投篮。对方两名队员站在前面,她没有及时传球,球很快被抢走,队友只好赶快回防。

bǐ sài kāi shǐ, xiǎo ān ná dào qiú jiù xiǎng zì jǐ tóu lán。 duì fāng liǎng míng duì yuán zhàn zài qián miàn, tā méi yǒu jí shí chuán qiú, qiú hěn kuài bèi qiǎng zǒu, duì yǒu zhǐ hǎo gǎn kuài huí fáng。

Xiao An initially tries to shoot when two opponents block her. She fails to pass, loses the ball and forces her teammates to defend.

暂停时,队长没有责备她,而是指着场上的位置说明:当这里有人防守时,另一边的队友可能会有更好的机会。

zàn tíng shí, duì zhǎng méi yǒu zé bèi tā, ér shì zhǐ zhe chǎng shàng de wèi zhì shuō míng: dāng zhè lǐ yǒu rén fáng shǒu shí, lìng yì biān de duì yǒu kě néng huì yǒu gèng hǎo de jī huì。

During a pause, the captain explains the positions without blaming her: a defended position may leave another teammate with a better opportunity.

重新上场以后,小安先抬头观察,再把球传给空位上的同学。虽然这一次不是她得分,队伍却完成了一次顺利的进攻。

chóng xīn shàng chǎng yǐ hòu, xiǎo ān xiān tái tóu guān chá, zài bǎ qiú chuán gěi kòng wèi shàng de tóng xué。 suī rán zhè yí cì bú shì tā dé fēn, duì wǔ què wán chéng le yí cì shùn lì de jìn gōng。

Returning to play, Xiao An looks up and passes to a free teammate; although she is not the scorer, the team completes a successful attack.

观众为进球鼓掌,也为一次及时的帮助喝彩。一名队员摔倒,对方球员停下来问他有没有受伤,裁判确认后比赛才继续。

guān zhòng wèi jìn qiú gǔ zhǎng, yě wèi yí cì jí shí de bāng zhù hè cǎi。 yì míng duì yuán shuāi dǎo, duì fāng qiú yuán tíng xià lai wèn tā yǒu méi yǒu shòu shāng, cái pàn què rèn hòu bǐ sài cái jì xù。

Spectators applaud a basket and a helpful act: an opponent checks on a fallen player before the referee allows play to continue.

最后,小安的队输了两分。有的人感到失望,教练却请大家回想,哪些地方进步了,哪些动作还需要练习,不能只用比分评价整场比赛。

zuì hòu, xiǎo ān de duì shū le liǎng fēn。 yǒu de rén gǎn dào shī wàng, jiào liàn què qǐng dà jiā huí xiǎng, nǎ xiē dì fang jìn bù le, nǎ xiē dòng zuò hái xū yào liàn xí, bù néng zhǐ yòng bǐ fēn píng jià zhěng chǎng bǐ sài。

Xiao An’s team loses by two points, but the coach asks what improved and what still needs practice rather than judging only by the score.

小安在记录本上写,自己学会了观察队友的位置。她也承认,最后几分钟传球仍然太急,需要和同学一起练习判断时机。

xiǎo ān zài jì lù běn shàng xiě, zì jǐ xué huì le guān chá duì yǒu de wèi zhì。 tā yě chéng rèn, zuì hòu jǐ fēn zhōng chuán qiú réng rán tài jí, xū yào hé tóng xué yì qǐ liàn xí pàn duàn shí jī。

An records her improved awareness of teammates' positions and acknowledges rushed passes near the end, identifying timing as a practice target.

离开球场前,两队互相握手。她明白,努力争取胜利与尊重对手可以同时做到;复盘比赛,则需要具体的事实和诚实的分析。

lí kāi qiú chǎng qián, liǎng duì hù xiāng wò shǒu。 tā míng bái, nǔ lì zhēng qǔ shèng lì yǔ zūn zhòng duì shǒu kě yǐ tóng shí zuò dào; fù pán bǐ sài, zé xū yào jù tǐ de shì shí hé chéng shí de fēn xī。

The teams shake hands, showing that striving to win and respecting opponents are compatible; reviewing a match needs specific facts and honest analysis.
