Keep the tongue forward
For j, q and x, keep the tongue tip down behind the lower teeth and use the front part of the tongue. q has a stronger puff than j; x lets the air flow. These are Mandarin sounds, not English J, Q and X.
Listen inside a syllable
Practise jiǔ, qī and xī. Keep the tongue forward as you blend into i. Compare one feature at a time: the initial, then the final, then the tone.
Dots disappear; the sound remains
After j, q and x, written u represents ü. Hear qù in qù xué xiào and jù in wán jù xióng. After n and l, keep the dots where needed, as in lǜ sè.
Syllables and words use the original course voice. Separate recordings are used only for simple, compound and nasal finals in the sound reference. For words, focus on the sound named on the card.
Record the two examples marked Practice 1 and Practice 2. Use the other examples whenever you want extra practice.
