Start with your mouth
For a, open your mouth comfortably. For o, round your lips; for e, keep them unrounded. These are starting cues: listen to the full Mandarin syllable instead of replacing it with an English vowel.
Keep u and ü different
For i, keep the tongue forward. For u, round the lips with the tongue further back. To approach ü, keep the tongue position of i while rounding the lips. Hear ü in yú and lǜ.
Letters depend on their neighbours
For simple o, practise complete syllables such as bō, pō, mō and fō with rounded lips; a brief u-like onset may be heard. The card wǒ contains the compound final uo and is not an isolated o model. The i in qī is not the same sound as the i in shí. Later lessons explain these spellings. Here, hear each vowel in a complete syllable or word.
Syllables and words use the original course voice. Separate recordings are used only for simple, compound and nasal finals in the sound reference. For words, focus on the sound named on the card.
Record the two examples marked Practice 1 and Practice 2. Use the other examples whenever you want extra practice.
