Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

iPhone or iPad · Safari
  1. Open this website in Safari, then tap Record and allow the request.
  2. If blocked, open Safari’s page menu beside the address, find Website Settings (or More, then Website Settings), and change Microphone to Ask or Allow for this website.
  3. You can also check Settings → Apps → Safari → Microphone; older versions may show Safari directly in Settings. Return to Safari and try again.

  1. In Chrome, open Settings → Site settings → Microphone. Allow this website or remove its blocked permission, then try Record again.
  2. If still blocked, check Android Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions → Microphone, and allow access while using the app.

Google’s microphone guide for Android

Mac · Safari or Chrome

In Safari, use Settings → Websites → Microphone and choose Ask or Allow for this website. In Chrome, open the controls beside the address → Site settings → Microphone → Allow.

If the browser is blocked by macOS, check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and allow the browser if listed. Relaunch it if requested; relaunching clears current voice clips.

Open the controls beside the website address and allow Microphone in this site’s permissions. In Windows Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone, check microphone access and permission for desktop apps. On older Windows versions, look under Privacy.

Even after being put in prison, Ma Liang refuses demands that would harm ordinary people.

He devises a way to recover the brush and makes the greedy man face the consequences of his own actions.

神笔马良

从前,有个叫马良的孩子很喜欢画画,可家里贫穷,没有钱买笔。他上山拾柴,便用树枝在沙地上画飞鸟;到河边割草,便用草根在河岸上画游鱼。没有纸笔,他仍然认真观察,反复练习。

cóng qián, yǒu gè jiào mǎ liáng de hái zi hěn xǐ huan huà huà, kě jiā lǐ pín qióng, méi yǒu qián mǎi bǐ。 tā shàng shān shí chái, biàn yòng shù zhī zài shā dì shàng huà fēi niǎo; dào hé biān gē cǎo, biàn yòng cǎo gēn zài hé àn shàng huà yóu yú。 méi yǒu zhǐ bǐ, tā réng rán rèn zhēn guān chá, fǎn fù liàn xí。

Poor Ma Liang practises with sticks and grass roots, drawing birds and fish on sand and riverbanks despite lacking paper and a brush.

一天夜里,一位老人送给他一支笔,请他帮助穷人。马良画了一只公鸡,公鸡竟从墙上飞下来叫了起来。他惊讶地发现,这是一支能让画中事物变成实物的神笔,自己的选择从此更有分量。

An old man gives him a brush for helping poor people. A drawn rooster becomes real, revealing how much his choices can now affect others.

他看见农民在硬土里拉犁,十分吃力,就画了一头牛。牛来到田里,帮忙耕地。别人需要的工具和物品,他也用画笔帮助准备。马良并没有把每一张画都换成自己的财富,而是留意附近人的困难。

tā kàn jiàn nóng mín zài yìng tǔ lǐ lā lí, shí fēn chī lì, jiù huà le yī tóu niú。 niú lái dào tián lǐ, bāng máng gēng dì。 bié rén xū yào de gōng jù hé wù pǐn, tā yě yòng huà bǐ bāng zhù zhǔn bèi。 mǎ liáng bìng méi yǒu bǎ měi yì zhāng huà dōu huàn chéng zì jǐ de cái fù, ér shì liú yì fù jìn rén de kùn nán。

He draws an ox to help farmers plough hard soil and provides other needed objects. His attention turns to neighbours’ difficulties, not personal wealth.

村里的人渐渐知道这支笔的本领,有人来要能劳动的工具,也有人希望得到自己根本不需要的东西。马良听清每个人的请求,再想想画出来会给别人带来什么,不是只要有人开口,就立刻答应。

cūn lǐ de rén jiàn jiàn zhī dào zhè zhī bǐ de běn lǐng, yǒu rén lái yào néng láo dòng de gōng jù, yě yǒu rén xī wàng dé dào zì jǐ gēn běn bù xū yào de dōng xi。 mǎ liáng tīng qīng měi gè rén de qǐng qiú, zài xiǎng xiǎng huà chū lái huì gěi bié rén dài lái shén me, bú shì zhǐ yào yǒu rén kāi kǒu, jiù lì kè dā ying。

As villagers learn about the brush, some request tools and others unnecessary possessions. Ma Liang listens and considers the consequences instead of granting every request.

一个贪心的官员听说神笔的本领,把马良抓来,命令他画金子。马良不愿意,便被关进监狱。到了夜里,他在墙上画了一扇门,打开以后,与其他被关的人一起逃走。官员却又派人把他抓了回来。

yí ge tān xīn de guān yuán tīng shuō shén bǐ de běn lǐng, bǎ mǎ liáng zhuā lái, mìng lìng tā huà jīn zi。 mǎ liáng bù yuàn yì, biàn bèi guān jìn jiān yù。 dào le yè lǐ, tā zài qiáng shàng huà le yī shàn mén, dǎ kāi yǐ hòu, yǔ qí tā bèi guān de rén yì qǐ táo zǒu。 guān yuán què yòu pài rén bǎ tā zhuā le huí lái。

A greedy official imprisons him for refusing to draw gold. A painted door enables escape with other prisoners, but he is caught again.

官员抢走神笔,交给自己的画师,想不经过马良也得到金子。画师画出的东西没有变成真的,官员急着往画上撞,还碰痛了头。

guān yuán qiǎng zǒu shén bǐ, jiāo gěi zì jǐ de huà shī, xiǎng bù jīng guò mǎ liáng yě dé dào jīn zi。 huà shī huà chū de dōng xi méi yǒu biàn chéng zhēn de, guān yuán jí zhe wǎng huà shàng zhuàng, hái pèng tòng le tóu。

The official seizes the brush and gives it to his painter, but the images do not become real; in his haste he hits his head against the picture.

为了让马良画画,官员只好把笔还给他。马良画出金山,又在山周围画了大海。官员看见金光,就要一条大船,迫不及待地上船出发,眼里只有远处的财富,根本没有想过别的事情。

wèi le ràng mǎ liáng huà huà, guān yuán zhǐ hǎo bǎ bǐ huán gěi tā。 mǎ liáng huà chū jīn shān, yòu zài shān zhōu wéi huà le dà hǎi。 guān yuán kàn jiàn jīn guāng, jiù yào yì tiáo dà chuán, pò bù jí dài de shàng chuán chū fā, yǎn lǐ zhǐ yǒu yuǎn chù de cái fù, gēn běn méi yǒu xiǎng guò bié de shì qíng。

The official returns the brush. Ma Liang draws a gold mountain surrounded by sea, and the impatient official demands a ship to reach it.

马良画上风,船向金山驶去;官员嫌慢,又要更大的风,海浪越来越高,终于把船和官员一起卷进海里。

mǎ liáng huà shàng fēng, chuán xiàng jīn shān shǐ qù; guān yuán xián màn, yòu yào gèng dà de fēng, hǎi làng yuè lái yuè gāo, zhōng yú bǎ chuán hé guān yuán yì qǐ juǎn jìn hǎi lǐ。

Ma Liang paints wind; the greedy official demands more, until the waves swallow both him and the boat.

海面终于平静下来,金山仍在远处,马良却已经转身,沿着小路回村。

hǎi miàn zhōng yú píng jìng xià lai, jīn shān réng zài yuǎn chù, mǎ liáng què yǐ jīng zhuǎn shēn, yán zhe xiǎo lù huí cūn。

The sea calms with the golden mountain distant, while Ma Liang returns to the village.

马良回到村里,又为需要帮助的人画工具,大家围过来,看见纸上的耕牛慢慢动了起来。

mǎ liáng huí dào cūn lǐ, yòu wèi xū yào bāng zhù de rén huà gōng jù, dà jiā wéi guò lái, kàn jiàn zhǐ shàng de gēng niú màn màn dòng le qǐ lai。

Ma Liang returns to the village and draws tools for people in need, who gather to see an ox begin moving from the page.

夕阳照着田地,新画的耕牛拉起犁,马良站在田边微笑,终于又把神笔用在自己最愿意做的事情上。

xī yáng zhào zhe tián dì, xīn huà de gēng niú lā qǐ lí, mǎ liáng zhàn zài tián biān wēi xiào, zhōng yú yòu bǎ shén bǐ yòng zài zì jǐ zuì yuàn yì zuò de shì qíng shàng。

In the evening light, the drawn ox pulls a plough as Ma Liang smiles, using the brush for what he most wishes to do.
