取经路上，天气热得很。唐僧让大家在树下歇一歇，孙悟空说：“我去找些果子。”猪八戒马上站起来：“我也去！”两人走了一段，八戒却捂着肚子，说自己走不动了。
qǔ jīng lù shàng， tiān qì rè de hěn。 táng sēng ràng dà jiā zài shù xià xiē yī xiē， sūn wù kōng shuō：“wǒ qù zhǎo xiē guǒ zi。” zhū bā jiè mǎ shàng zhàn qǐ lái：“wǒ yě qù！” liǎng rén zǒu le yí duàn， bā jiè què wǔ zhe dù zi， shuō zì jǐ zǒu bù dòng le。
On the pilgrimage, the weather was terribly hot. Tang Sanzang told everyone to rest under a tree. “I will find some fruit,” said Sun Wukong. “I will come too!” Zhu Bajie replied. After walking a while, Bajie held his stomach and said he could go no further.
悟空让他在原地等候，自己继续向前。八戒等了一会儿，觉得口渴，便钻进附近的瓜地，发现一个熟透的大西瓜。他抱着瓜坐到树荫里，用刀切成四块。

Wukong told him to wait and went on alone. Thirsty, Bajie entered a nearby melon patch and found a ripe watermelon. He carried it into the shade and cut it into four pieces.
他一边切一边说：“师父一块，悟空一块，沙师弟一块，我一块。”说完，拿起自己的那块，大口吃起来。瓜汁又甜又凉，吃完以后，他仍觉得不够。

“One for Master, one for Wukong, one for Brother Sha and one for me,” he said. He ate his own share in great mouthfuls. The juice was sweet and cool, but he still wanted more.
八戒看看悟空的那块，心想：“猴哥正在找果子，一定已经吃饱了。”他便把这一块也吃了。再看看师父的那块，又说：“师父肚子凉，吃西瓜怕不舒服。”这块很快也只剩瓜皮。

Looking at Wukong's share, he thought, “He is finding fruit, so he must already be full.” He ate it. Then he said of Master's share, “Master might feel unwell eating cold melon.” Soon that piece too was only rind.
只剩最后一块了。八戒舔舔嘴唇：“沙师弟老实，不会怪我。留着这一小块也不够大家分，不如让我吃了。”不到一会儿，四块西瓜全进了他的肚子。

One piece remained. Bajie licked his lips. “Brother Sha is kind and will not blame me. This little piece cannot feed everyone anyway.” Soon all four pieces were in his stomach.
孙悟空回来时，远远看见八戒正在吃瓜。他没有出声，只藏在旁边。八戒听见动静，急忙把瓜皮扔开，躺在地上，闭起眼睛，装作睡得很熟。

Returning, Wukong saw Bajie eating from a distance and hid nearby without speaking. Hearing a noise, Bajie threw the rinds aside, lay down and pretended to be sound asleep.
悟空叫醒他，带着他回去。走了几步，八戒踩到一块瓜皮，扑通摔倒。站起来再走，又踩到另一块。原来悟空悄悄把瓜皮移到了他脚下。

Wukong woke him and led him back. After a few steps, Bajie slipped on a rind and fell. He got up and soon slipped on another. Wukong had quietly moved the rinds into his path.
八戒摔得鼻子发红，忍不住喊：“谁把西瓜皮扔在这里！”悟空笑道：“你怎么知道是西瓜皮？刚才不是一直在睡觉吗？”八戒张了张嘴，脸更红了。
bā jiè shuāi de bí zi fā hóng， rěn bú zhù hǎn：“shuí bǎ xī guā pí rēng zài zhè lǐ！” wù kōng xiào dào：“nǐ zěn me zhī dào shì xī guā pí？ gāng cái bú shì yì zhí zài shuì jiào ma？” bā jiè zhāng le zhāng zuǐ， liǎn gèng hóng le。
With his nose reddened by the falls, Bajie cried, “Who left watermelon rind here?” Wukong laughed. “How do you know it is watermelon? Were you not asleep?” Bajie opened his mouth, then blushed even more.
回到树下，师父问有没有找到食物。八戒低着头，终于把吃瓜的经过说了出来。悟空拿出带回的果子分给大家，八戒这一次伸手以前，先看看每个人有没有拿到。
