Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

虎门销烟

一八三九年六月三日,广东虎门海边聚集了许多人。海风吹过岸边,大家望着已经准备好的销烟池,等候工作开始。

yī bā sān jiǔ nián liù yuè sān rì, guǎng dōng hǔ mén hǎi biān jù jí le xǔ duō rén。 hǎi fēng chuī guò àn biān, dà jiā wàng zhe yǐ jīng zhǔn bèi hǎo de xiāo yān chí, děng hòu gōng zuò kāi shǐ。

On 3 June 1839, many people gathered on the coast at Humen in Guangdong. Sea winds blew as they watched the prepared destruction pools and waited for work to begin.

这时,鸦片已经使不少家庭陷入困境。有人因吸食鸦片损害身体,也有人为购买鸦片花尽钱财,家人跟着受苦。林则徐来到广东,查禁鸦片,并组织销毁收缴的鸦片。

zhè shí, yā piàn yǐ jīng shǐ bù shǎo jiā tíng xiàn rù kùn jìng。 yǒu rén yīn xī shí yā piàn sǔn hài shēn tǐ, yě yǒu rén wèi gòu mǎi yā piàn huā jǐn qián cái, jiā rén gēn zhe shòu kǔ。 lín zé xú lái dào guǎng dōng, chá jìn yā piàn, bìng zǔ zhī xiāo huǐ shōu jiǎo de yā piàn。

Opium had brought hardship to many families. Some people damaged their health by using it; others spent their money buying it, causing their families to suffer. Lin Zexu came to Guangdong to suppress the trade and organise the destruction of confiscated opium.

现场的工人各有分工。有人搬运,有人按安排处理池中的材料,也有人在旁边检查。林则徐察看进展,周围的人随着工作的开始,渐渐安静下来。

xiàn chǎng de gōng rén gè yǒu fēn gōng。 yǒu rén bān yùn, yǒu rén àn ān pái chǔ lǐ chí zhōng de cái liào, yě yǒu rén zài páng biān jiǎn chá。 lín zé xú chá kàn jìn zhǎn, zhōu wéi de rén suí zhe gōng zuò de kāi shǐ, jiàn jiàn ān jìng xià lai。

Workers had different roles: some carried materials, others handled them in the pools, and others checked the work. Lin Zexu observed the progress as the watching crowd gradually fell quiet.

一箱箱鸦片被送到池边,按照规定的过程销毁。工人忙碌着,海风把衣角吹起来,他们却仍留意手里的事情,没有因为围观的人多就乱了顺序。

yì xiāng xiāng yā piàn bèi sòng dào chí biān, àn zhào guī dìng de guò chéng xiāo huǐ。 gōng rén máng lù zhe, hǎi fēng bǎ yì jiǎo chuī qǐ lai, tā men què réng liú yì shǒu lǐ de shì qíng, méi yǒu yīn wèi wéi guān de rén duō jiù luàn le shùn xù。

Crates of opium were brought to the pools and destroyed through the organised process. Sea winds lifted the workers' clothes, but they remained focused despite the crowd.

销烟持续了多日,岸边的场面也被许多人记住。百姓站在远处,看着那些曾使人受害的鸦片被处理,心中有愤怒,也有盼望。

xiāo yān chí xù le duō rì, àn biān de chǎng miàn yě bèi xǔ duō rén jì zhù。 bǎi xìng zhàn zài yuǎn chù, kàn zhe nà xiē céng shǐ rén shòu hài de yā piàn bèi chǔ lǐ, xīn zhōng yǒu fèn nù, yě yǒu pàn wàng。

The destruction continued for many days and remained in people's memories. Watching from a distance, they felt anger at the harm caused by opium and hope for change.

虎门的潮水不断涨落,销烟的行动却进入了历史。林则徐的名字,也从此与这段反对鸦片危害的经历紧紧相连。

hǔ mén de cháo shuǐ bù duàn zhǎng luò, xiāo yān de xíng dòng què jìn rù le lì shǐ。 lín zé xú de míng zi, yě cóng cǐ yǔ zhè duàn fǎn duì yā piàn wēi hài de jīng lì jǐn jǐn xiāng lián。

Humen's tides continued to rise and fall, while the event entered history. Lin Zexu's name became closely associated with this action against the harm of opium.
