Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

在机场

清晨,林悦跟爸爸来到机场,准备坐飞机去看外婆;她把护照放在小包里,先看大厅的指示牌。

qīng chén, lín yuè gēn bà ba lái dào jī chǎng, zhǔn bèi zuò fēi jī qù kàn wài pó; tā bǎ hù zhào fàng zài xiǎo bāo lǐ, xiān kàn dà tīng de zhǐ shì pái。

Early in the morning Lin Yue arrives at the airport with her father to fly to see her grandmother; she keeps her passport in a small bag and first checks the signs.

爸爸找到航空公司的柜台,工作人员问行李是不是他们自己收拾的,爸爸回答后,把需要托运的箱子交给她。

bà ba zhǎo dào háng kōng gōng sī de guì tái, gōng zuò rén yuán wèn xíng li shì bú shì tā men zì jǐ shōu shi de, bà ba huí dá hòu, bǎ xū yào tuō yùn de xiāng zi jiāo gěi tā。

Her father finds the airline counter; a staff member asks whether they packed the luggage themselves, and after answering he hands over the suitcase to be checked in.

林悦拿到登机牌,仔细核对姓名和登机口,又把箱子的收据收好,免得下飞机以后找不到。

lín yuè ná dào dēng jī pái, zǐ xì hé duì xìng míng hé dēng jī kǒu, yòu bǎ xiāng zi de shōu jù shōu hǎo, miǎn de xià fēi jī yǐ hòu zhǎo bú dào。

Lin Yue checks the name and gate on her boarding pass and keeps the luggage receipt safe so she can find it after landing.

过了安检,他们按指示走向候机区;林悦想先买饮料,爸爸提醒她先确认登机口,再安排其他事情。

guò le ān jiǎn, tā men àn zhǐ shì zǒu xiàng hòu jī qū; lín yuè xiǎng xiān mǎi yǐn liào, bà ba tí xǐng tā xiān què rèn dēng jī kǒu, zài ān pái qí tā shì qíng。

After security they follow the signs to the waiting area; when Lin Yue wants a drink, her father suggests confirming the gate before doing other things.

不久,广播说他们的登机口有变化,她没有只凭自己听到的一个号码就带着爸爸往前跑。

bù jiǔ, guǎng bō shuō tā men de dēng jī kǒu yǒu biàn huà, tā méi yǒu zhǐ píng zì jǐ tīng dào de yí ge hào mǎ jiù dài zhe bà ba wǎng qián pǎo。

An announcement soon says their gate has changed; she does not rush ahead with her father based on just one number she thinks she heard.

她走到服务台问:“请问,这个航班现在在哪个登机口登机?”工作人员指着屏幕,说明新的位置。

tā zǒu dào fú wù tái wèn:“qǐng wèn, zhè ge háng bān xiàn zài zài nǎ ge dēng jī kǒu dēng jī?” gōng zuò rén yuán zhǐ zhe píng mù, shuō míng xīn de wèi zhì。

She asked at the desk, “Which gate is this flight boarding at now?” The employee pointed to the screen and explained.

到了新的候机区,他们再次核对航班信息,坐在附近等候;林悦说,旧的登机牌不能代替最新通知。

dào le xīn de hòu jī qū, tā men zài cì hé duì háng bān xìn xī, zuò zài fù jìn děng hòu; lín yuè shuō, jiù de dēng jī pái bù néng dài tì zuì xīn tōng zhī。

At the new waiting area they check the flight information again and sit nearby; Lin Yue observes that an old boarding pass cannot replace an updated notice.

轮到他们登机时,她把证件和登机牌准备好,跟爸爸一起排队,觉得问清楚比着急猜测更有用。

lún dào tā men dēng jī shí, tā bǎ zhèng jiàn hé dēng jī pái zhǔn bèi hǎo, gēn bà ba yì qǐ pái duì, jué de wèn qīng chu bǐ zháo jí cāi cè gèng yǒu yòng。

When their turn comes she prepares her documents and boarding pass and queues with her father, finding that asking clearly is more useful than guessing anxiously.
