Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

Revise a judgement into an accurate feeling.

Goals & study plan
Two diary entries: an uncertain stage and a questioning sky

Compare an event, a feeling and a claim about other people. In the second diary, distinguish a drawn sky pattern from imagined objects and from actual stellar distances. You can pause after any study block and continue later.

  • Revise a judgement into an accurate feeling.
  • Identify recovery and a next practice step.
  • Separate observation from imagination in a diary.

日记两则

六月十二日,星期五,晴。今天轮到我在中文班读自己的短文,排练时我能读得很流利,真正站到大家面前,手里的纸却轻轻抖起来。

liù yuè shí èr rì, xīng qī wǔ, qíng。 jīn tiān lún dào wǒ zài zhōng wén bān dú zì jǐ de duǎn wén, pái liàn shí wǒ néng dú de hěn liú lì, zhēn zhèng zhàn dào dà jiā miàn qián, shǒu lǐ de zhǐ què qīng qīng dǒu qǐ lai。

Friday, 12 June, sunny: I can read my composition fluently in rehearsal, but the paper trembles when I face the class.

我看见同学们等着,心里越想赶快完成,越容易把行看错,读到第二段时突然停住,原来熟悉的词好像也躲到了纸张的另一边。

wǒ kàn jiàn tóng xué men děng zhe, xīn lǐ yuè xiǎng gǎn kuài wán chéng, yuè róng yì bǎ háng kàn cuò, dú dào dì èr duàn shí tū rán tíng zhù, yuán lái shú xī de cí hǎo xiàng yě duǒ dào le zhǐ zhāng de lìng yì biān。

Wanting to finish quickly, I lose my place and stop in paragraph two, as if familiar words hide across the page.

台下很安静,我以为每个人都在批评我,脸越来越热,直到老师说可以先看清下一句,我才慢慢找到位置,把最后几行读完。

tái xià hěn ān jìng, wǒ yǐ wéi měi gè rén dōu zài pī píng wǒ, liǎn yuè lái yuè rè, zhí dào lǎo shī shuō kě yǐ xiān kàn qīng xià yī jù, wǒ cái màn màn zhǎo dào wèi zhì, bǎ zuì hòu jǐ háng dú wán。

I interpret silence as criticism until the teacher suggests finding the next sentence, allowing me to finish.

走回座位时,同桌递来水,说她注意到我最后读得比开始稳定,我原来只记得停顿,现在才发现同一场表现里也有后来恢复的部分。

zǒu huí zuò wèi shí, tóng zhuō dì lái shuǐ, shuō tā zhù yì dào wǒ zuì hòu dú de bǐ kāi shǐ wěn dìng, wǒ yuán lái zhǐ jì de tíng dùn, xiàn zài cái fā xiàn tóng yī chǎng biǎo xiàn lǐ yě yǒu hòu lái huī fù de bù fèn。

My neighbour notices a steadier ending, helping me recognise recovery alongside the pause I remembered.

放学前,老师没有把一次失误当成我的全部能力,而是与我商量下次先在小组里练,再试一次,我把具体办法写在今天的日记下面。

fàng xué qián, lǎo shī méi yǒu bǎ yí cì shī wù dàng chéng wǒ de quán bù néng lì, ér shì yǔ wǒ shāng liáng xià cì xiān zài xiǎo zǔ lǐ liàn, zài shì yí cì, wǒ bǎ jù tǐ bàn fǎ xiě zài jīn tiān de rì jì xià miàn。

The teacher proposes practising in a small group before another attempt rather than treating one mistake as my whole ability.

晚上重读这篇日记,我把“大家一定都失望”改成“我当时担心大家失望”,因为前一句替别人下了判断,后一句才准确地记录自己的心情。

wǎn shàng chóng dú zhè piān rì jì, wǒ bǎ “dà jiā yí dìng dōu shī wàng” gǎi chéng “wǒ dāng shí dān xīn dà jiā shī wàng”, yīn wèi qián yī jù tì bié rén xià le pàn duàn, hòu yī jù cái zhǔn què de jì lù zì jǐ de xīn qíng。

Rereading at night, I change “everyone was disappointed” to “I worried they were disappointed,” accurately recording my feeling rather than their minds.

下一次站上台以前,我还想试着先看一位熟悉的同学,再慢慢开始第一句。

xià yí cì zhàn shàng tái yǐ qián, wǒ hái xiǎng shì zhe xiān kàn yí wèi shú xī de tóng xué, zài màn màn kāi shǐ dì yī jù。

Before the next presentation, I plan to look at a familiar classmate and begin the first sentence slowly.

七月四日,星期六,晴。晚饭以后,我与爸爸在院子里看星空,屋里的灯关了,深蓝色的天空中,慢慢显出更多可以辨认的小光点。

qī yuè sì rì, xīng qī liù, qíng。 wǎn fàn yǐ hòu, wǒ yǔ bà ba zài yuàn zi lǐ kàn xīng kōng, wū lǐ de dēng guān le, shēn lán sè de tiān kōng zhōng, màn màn xiǎn chū gèng duō kě yǐ biàn rèn de xiǎo guāng diǎn。

Saturday, 4 July, sunny: Dad and I turn off indoor lights and watch more small lights emerge in the deep-blue sky.

我先觉得星星没有顺序,后来试着比较位置,发现几颗亮星能连成有趣的形状,爸爸却提醒我,想象出的图案与星星真实的距离不是一回事。

wǒ xiān jué dé xīng xing méi yǒu shùn xù, hòu lái shì zhe bǐ jiào wèi zhì, fā xiàn jǐ kē liàng xīng néng lián chéng yǒu qù de xíng zhuàng, bà ba què tí xǐng wǒ, xiǎng xiàng chū de tú àn yǔ xīng xing zhēn shí de jù lí bú shì yī huí shì。

Comparing positions reveals imagined shapes, while Dad distinguishes these patterns from the stars' real distances.

奶奶说过一则故事,把星星的光与人的善良联系起来,我喜欢那种温暖的想法,但知道故事表达愿望,并不能证明一个人的品格控制星星亮度。

nǎi nai shuō guò yì zé gù shì, bǎ xīng xing de guāng yǔ rén de shàn liáng lián xì qǐ lai, wǒ xǐ huan nà zhǒng wēn nuǎn de xiǎng fǎ, dàn zhī dào gù shì biǎo dá yuàn wàng, bìng bù néng zhèng míng yí ge rén de pǐn gé kòng zhì xīng xing liàng dù。

Grandma's story links starlight with kindness; I appreciate its warmth without treating it as proof of a physical connection.

我在本子上分成两栏,一栏画今天看见的形状,另一栏写由这些形状想到的小船、勺子与动物,又把还想查的天文问题留在页边。

wǒ zài běn zi shàng fēn chéng liǎng lán, yī lán huà jīn tiān kàn jiàn de xíng zhuàng, lìng yī lán xiě yóu zhè xiē xíng zhuàng xiǎng dào de xiǎo chuán、 sháo zi yǔ dòng wù, yòu bǎ hái xiǎng chá de tiān wén wèn tí liú zài yè biān。

I separate seen shapes from imagined boats, spoons and animals, leaving astronomy questions in the margin.

爸爸没有让我立刻记住所有星座名称,而是约好另一天再看同一片天空,我们可以比较位置,也检查今天的图究竟画得清不清楚。

bà ba méi yǒu ràng wǒ lì kè jì zhù suǒ yǒu xīng zuò míng chēng, ér shì yuē hǎo lìng yì tiān zài kàn tóng yí piàn tiān kōng, wǒ men kě yǐ bǐ jiào wèi zhì, yě jiǎn chá jīn tiān de tú jiū jìng huà de qīng bù qīng chu。

Dad suggests revisiting the same sky to compare positions and test the drawing rather than memorising every constellation now.

屋里的灯亮起来,爸爸叫我进去。我合上本子,又望了一眼刚才画过的星星。明天还要查的几个问题,已经好好留在今天这一页上。

wū lǐ de dēng liàng qǐ lai, bà ba jiào wǒ jìn qu。 wǒ hé shàng běn zi, yòu wàng le yī yǎn gāng cái huà guò de xīng xing。 míng tiān hái yào chá de jǐ gè wèn tí, yǐ jīng hǎo hǎo liú zài jīn tiān zhè yí yè shàng。

The indoor lights came on and Dad called me in. I closed my notebook and looked once more at the stars. The questions for tomorrow were safely on today's page.
