Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

Dongguo and the wolf: kindness and judgement

Compare a promise with later actions. The wolf’s request and behaviour give different evidence; follow how the old man asks for a demonstration. You can pause after any study block and continue later.

  • Retell the request, rescue and broken promise.
  • Compare a claim with observable actions.
  • Explain how the sack becomes part of the escape.

东郭先生和狼

A traditional fable, retold in modern Chinese.

东郭先生牵着驴走在路上。忽然,一只狼从树林里跑出来,喘着气说:“先生,猎人正在追我,请把我藏进你的口袋里。你救了我,我一定报答你!”

dōng guō xiān shēng qiān zhe lǘ zǒu zài lù shàng。 hū rán, yì zhī láng cóng shù lín lǐ pǎo chū lái, chuǎn zhe qì shuō:“xiān shēng, liè rén zhèng zài zhuī wǒ, qǐng bǎ wǒ cáng jìn nǐ de kǒu dài lǐ。 nǐ jiù le wǒ, wǒ yí dìng bào dá nǐ!”

Mr Dongguo was walking with his donkey when a wolf ran out of the woods. Panting, it said, “A hunter is chasing me. Please hide me in your sack. If you save me, I will repay you!”

先生看见狼腿上的伤,心里不忍。他倒出口袋里的书,让狼缩起身子钻进去,再把袋口扎好。不一会儿,猎人赶到,问他有没有看见一只狼。

xiān shēng kàn jiàn láng tuǐ shàng de shāng, xīn lǐ bù rěn。 tā dào chū kǒu dài lǐ de shū, ràng láng suō qǐ shēn zi zuān jìn qu, zài bǎ dài kǒu zā hǎo。 bù yī huì er, liè rén gǎn dào, wèn tā yǒu méi yǒu kàn jiàn yì zhī láng。

Seeing the wound on the wolf's leg, he felt pity. He emptied his books from the sack, let the wolf curl up inside and tied it shut. Soon a hunter arrived and asked whether he had seen a wolf.

先生摇摇头,猎人继续向前追去。等脚步声听不见了,先生打开口袋。狼跳出来,伸了伸腿,却没有道谢,反而一步步向他逼近。

xiān shēng yáo yao tóu, liè rén jì xù xiàng qián zhuī qù。 děng jiǎo bù shēng tīng bú jiàn le, xiān shēng dǎ kāi kǒu dài。 láng tiào chū lái, shēn le shēn tuǐ, què méi yǒu dào xiè, fǎn ér yí bù bù xiàng tā bī jìn。

Mr Dongguo shook his head and the hunter continued. When the footsteps faded, he opened the sack. The wolf jumped out and stretched, but instead of thanking him it advanced towards him.

狼说:“我在袋子里闷了半天,现在饿得很。你既然救了我,就让我吃了你吧!”先生大惊,连连后退:“我刚救了你的命,你怎么能这样?”

láng shuō:“wǒ zài dài zi lǐ mēn le bàn tiān, xiàn zài è de hěn。 nǐ jì rán jiù le wǒ, jiù ràng wǒ chī le nǐ ba!” xiān shēng dà jīng, lián lián hòu tuì:“wǒ gāng jiù le nǐ de mìng, nǐ zěn me néng zhè yàng?”

“I have been shut in that sack and now I am very hungry. Since you saved me, let me eat you!” said the wolf. Mr Dongguo stepped back in alarm. “I just saved your life. How can you do this?”

狼张开嘴,先生绕到驴的另一边,狼也绕过去。他一面躲,一面喊救命。这时,一位老人拄着木杖走来,问他们为什么争吵。

láng zhāng kāi zuǐ, xiān shēng rào dào lǘ de lìng yì biān, láng yě rào guò qù。 tā yí miàn duǒ, yí miàn hǎn jiù mìng。 zhè shí, yí wèi lǎo rén zhǔ zhe mù zhàng zǒu lái, wèn tā men wèi shén me zhēng chǎo。

The wolf opened its jaws. Mr Dongguo moved behind the donkey and the wolf followed. He dodged it and called for help. An old man approached with a staff and asked what the quarrel was about.

先生把经过告诉老人。狼却说:“他把我塞进口袋,差点闷死我!”老人看看狼,又看看口袋,皱着眉说:“袋子这么小,你这么大,怎么装得进去?”

xiān shēng bǎ jīng guò gào su lǎo rén。 láng què shuō:“tā bǎ wǒ sāi jìn kǒu dài, chà diǎn mēn sǐ wǒ!” lǎo rén kàn kan láng, yòu kàn kan kǒu dài, zhòu zhe méi shuō:“dài zi zhè me xiǎo, nǐ zhè me dà, zěn me zhuāng de jìn qu?”

Mr Dongguo explained. “He forced me into the sack and almost suffocated me!” the wolf protested. The old man examined both. “That sack is so small and you are so large. How could you fit inside?”

狼急着证明自己没有说谎,马上缩起四条腿,钻进口袋。老人向先生使了个眼色,两人立刻收紧袋口,把狼牢牢困住。

láng jí zhe zhèng míng zì jǐ méi yǒu shuō huǎng, mǎ shàng suō qǐ sì tiáo tuǐ, zuān jìn kǒu dài。 lǎo rén xiàng xiān shēng shǐ le gè yǎn sè, liǎng rén lì kè shōu jǐn dài kǒu, bǎ láng láo láo kùn zhù。

Eager to prove its claim, the wolf curled up its legs and climbed into the sack. The old man signalled to Mr Dongguo, and together they tightened the opening, trapping the wolf.

袋子里传来狼的叫声。老人说:“它刚才怎样对你,你已经看见了。不要再放它出来。”先生这才松开一直抓着驴背的手,向老人深深作揖。

dài zi lǐ chuán lái láng de jiào shēng。 lǎo rén shuō:“tā gāng cái zěn yàng duì nǐ, nǐ yǐ jīng kàn jiàn le。 bú yào zài fàng tā chū lái。” xiān shēng zhè cái sōng kāi yì zhí zhuā zhe lǘ bèi de shǒu, xiàng lǎo rén shēn shēn zuò yī。

The wolf called from inside. “You have already seen how it treated you. Do not release it again,” the old man said. At last Mr Dongguo let go of the donkey's back and bowed deeply in thanks.

风吹动散在地上的书页。先生把书一本本捡起来,重新装好,牵着驴继续赶路。走到树林外,他仍记得狼跳出口袋时露出的牙齿。

fēng chuī dòng sàn zài dì shàng de shū yè。 xiān shēng bǎ shū yì běn běn jiǎn qǐ lái, chóng xīn zhuāng hǎo, qiān zhe lǘ jì xù gǎn lù。 zǒu dào shù lín wài, tā réng jì de láng tiào chū kǒu dài shí lù chū de yá chǐ。

The wind stirred the books on the ground. Mr Dongguo gathered them, packed them and continued with his donkey. Beyond the woods, he still remembered the teeth the wolf had bared when it sprang out.
