Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

孔子求教

A traditional teaching anecdote featuring Confucius, retold for learners.

在这则改编故事里,孔子和学生走在乡间,看见农家姑娘把水桶稳稳地挂在扁担上,便停下来请教怎样安排两边的重量。

zài zhè zé gǎi biān gù shì lǐ, kǒng zǐ hé xué shēng zǒu zài xiāng jiān, kàn jiàn nóng jiā gū niáng bǎ shuǐ tǒng wěn wěn de guà zài biǎn dàn shàng, biàn tíng xià lai qǐng jiào zěn yàng ān pái liǎng biān de zhòng liàng。

In this adapted story, Confucius and his students see a farm girl balancing buckets on a carrying pole and ask how she distributes the weight.

学生原先以为,老师懂得很多,不必向一个年轻姑娘询问日常的办法。

xué shēng yuán xiān yǐ wéi, lǎo shī dǒng de hěn duō, bù bì xiàng yí ge nián qīng gū niáng xún wèn rì cháng de bàn fǎ。

A student initially thinks that their knowledgeable teacher need not ask a young girl about an everyday task.

姑娘听清他们的问题,指着手边的水桶和扁担,一步一步说明怎样调整绳子的位置。

gū niáng tīng qīng tā men de wèn tí, zhǐ zhe shǒu biān de shuǐ tǒng hé biǎn dàn, yí bù yí bù shuō míng zěn yàng tiáo zhěng shéng zi de wèi zhì。

The girl points to the buckets and carrying pole and explains how she adjusts the ropes step by step.

姑娘把每一步之间的关系说清楚,还提醒有一个动作不能颠倒。学生原来只记得最后的结果,现在才明白,为什么中间的安排也很重要。他拿起本子,把容易弄混的地方画成小图,再请姑娘确认。

gū niáng bǎ měi yí bù zhī jiān de guān xì shuō qīng chǔ, hái tí xǐng yǒu yí ge dòng zuò bù néng diān dǎo。 xué shēng yuán lái zhǐ jì de zuì hòu de jié guǒ, xiàn zài cái míng bái, wèi shén me zhōng jiān de ān pái yě hěn zhòng yào。 tā ná qǐ běn zi, bǎ róng yì nòng hùn de dì fang huà chéng xiǎo tú, zài qǐng gū niáng què rèn。

The girl explains the order of steps, and the student realises that the process matters as well as the result. He draws a diagram and asks her to check it.

她说得并不复杂,却把容易漏掉的细节交代清楚,学生这才知道自己原来没有想到。

tā shuō de bìng bù fù zá, què bǎ róng yì lòu diào de xì jié jiāo dài qīng chu, xué shēng zhè cái zhī dào zì jǐ yuán lái méi yǒu xiǎng dào。

Her explanation is simple but clear about easily missed details, and the student realises what he overlooked.

孔子认真听完,向她道谢,并请学生记住其中有用的办法。

kǒng zǐ rèn zhēn tīng wán, xiàng tā dào xiè, bìng qǐng xué shēng jì zhù qí zhōng yǒu yòng de bàn fǎ。

Confucius listens carefully, thanks her and asks his students to remember the useful method.

孔子并没有因为自己是老师就抢着解释,也没有因为姑娘年轻就随便点头。他认真听她熟悉的事情,提出还不清楚的问题,等她说完以后才回应。身旁的学生看着这一幕,发现请教也需要耐心与尊重。

kǒng zǐ bìng méi yǒu yīn wèi zì jǐ shì lǎo shī jiù qiǎng zhe jiě shì, yě méi yǒu yīn wèi gū niáng nián qīng jiù suí biàn diǎn tóu。 tā rèn zhēn tīng tā shú xī de shì qíng, tí chū hái bù qīng chu de wèn tí, děng tā shuō wán yǐ hòu cái huí yìng。 shēn páng de xué shēng kàn zhe zhè yí mù, fā xiàn qǐng jiào yě xū yào nài xīn yǔ zūn zhòng。

Confucius listens patiently, asks about unclear details and responds only after she finishes, showing his students that seeking guidance needs respect.

继续赶路时,学生问老师为什么愿意向别人请教。

jì xù gǎn lù shí, xué shēng wèn lǎo shī wèi shén me yuàn yì xiàng bié rén qǐng jiào。

As they continue, a student asks why the teacher is willing to seek guidance from others.

孔子告诉他,别人有自己熟悉的经验,只要愿意观察,就能发现值得学习的地方。

kǒng zǐ gào su tā, bié rén yǒu zì jǐ shú xī de jīng yàn, zhǐ yào yuàn yì guān chá, jiù néng fā xiàn zhí de xué xí de dì fang。

Confucius tells him that others have their own expertise, and attentive observation can reveal something worth learning.

那天以后,学生走过村庄时,不再只顾低头看书,也开始留意人们怎样处理身边的事情。

nà tiān yǐ hòu, xué shēng zǒu guò cūn zhuāng shí, bù zài zhǐ gù dī tóu kàn shū, yě kāi shǐ liú yì rén men zěn yàng chǔ lǐ shēn biān de shì qíng。

After that day, the student no longer only looks down at his book when passing villages; he notices how people handle everyday tasks.
