Start near the teeth
For z, c and s, keep the tongue tip close to the back of the upper teeth. c has a stronger puff than z; s is a continuous friction sound.
Move further back
For zh, ch, sh and r, raise the tongue tip toward a place further back. ch has a stronger puff than zh. Keep the movement small and comfortable instead of forcing a large curl.
A special written i
The i in zi/ci/si and zhi/chi/shi/ri is not the vowel in yī or qī. Learn the whole syllables by listening. sì and shí differ in both initial and tone: pay attention to both.
Syllables and words use the original course voice. Separate recordings are used only for simple, compound and nasal finals in the sound reference. For words, focus on the sound named on the card.
Record the two examples marked Practice 1 and Practice 2. Use the other examples whenever you want extra practice.
