Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

A reading response: imagination with a starting point

A reading response can explain a detail, express a reaction and extend it imaginatively. Label the underwater station as the reader’s idea, then turn practical gaps into further questions. You can pause after any study block and continue later.

  • Identify a remembered detail and a personal reaction.
  • Distinguish source content from an imagined extension.
  • Turn imagination into questions for further reading.

读后感

An original reader’s response to Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas.

读《海底两万里》时,我最难忘的是尼摩船长和他的潜艇。船潜入水下,人物透过窗户看见海中的景物,原来只在海面上航行的人,忽然有了另一种望向世界的机会。

dú 《 hǎi dǐ liǎng wàn lǐ 》 shí, wǒ zuì nán wàng de shì ní mó chuán zhǎng hé tā de qián tǐng。 chuán qián rù shuǐ xià, rén wù tòu guò chuāng hù kàn jiàn hǎi zhōng de jǐng wù, yuán lái zhǐ zài hǎi miàn shàng háng xíng de rén, hū rán yǒu le lìng yì zhǒng wàng xiàng shì jiè de jī huì。

Reading Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, I remembered Captain Nemo and his submarine most vividly. Through its windows, the characters see underwater scenery, gaining a new view of the world.

我喜欢书里的冒险,也常为人物担心。海底并不是只有漂亮的鱼和安静的水,有时会出现危险,船上的人必须想办法应对。吸引我的,不只是到了哪里,还有他们怎样面对变化。

wǒ xǐ huan shū lǐ de mào xiǎn, yě cháng wèi rén wù dān xīn。 hǎi dǐ bìng bú shì zhǐ yǒu piào liàng de yú hé ān jìng de shuǐ, yǒu shí huì chū xiàn wēi xiǎn, chuán shàng de rén bì xū xiǎng bàn fǎ yìng duì。 xī yǐn wǒ de, bù zhǐ shì dào le nǎ lǐ, hái yǒu tā men zěn yàng miàn duì biàn huà。

I enjoyed the adventures and worried for the characters. The sea holds danger as well as beautiful fish and quiet water. I was drawn not only to where they travelled but to how they responded to change.

合上书,我想画一座海底观察站。窗边有人记录鱼的动作,也有人查看仪器。可是画到门口,我突然问自己:人怎样进去?空气从哪里来?遇到困难,又怎样回到岸上?

hé shàng shū, wǒ xiǎng huà yí zuò hǎi dǐ guān chá zhàn。 chuāng biān yǒu rén jì lù yú de dòng zuò, yě yǒu rén chá kàn yí qì。 kě shì huà dào mén kǒu, wǒ tū rán wèn zì jǐ: rén zěn yàng jìn qu? kōng qì cóng nǎ lǐ lái? yù dào kùn nán, yòu zěn yàng huí dào àn shàng?

After closing the book, I imagined an underwater observation station, with people watching fish and checking instruments. Drawing its doorway made me ask how people would enter, obtain air and return safely.

我还想把书推荐给朋友,问他最记得哪一次冒险。也许他喜欢的地方和我不同,我们就能一起谈谈,为什么同一本书会留下不同的画面。

wǒ hái xiǎng bǎ shū tuī jiàn gěi péng yǒu, wèn tā zuì jì de nǎ yí cì mào xiǎn。 yě xǔ tā xǐ huan de dì fang hé wǒ bù tóng, wǒ men jiù néng yì qǐ tán tán, wèi shén me tóng yì běn shū huì liú xià bù tóng de huà miàn。

I also wanted to recommend the book to a friend and hear which adventure stayed with him. Different favourites could start a conversation about the same book.

这些问题使我发现,想象可以打开一扇门,却不能替我们完成所有准备。书里的旅程已经结束,我的问题还没有结束。下一次去图书馆,我想再找一本讲海洋探索的书。

zhè xiē wèn tí shǐ wǒ fā xiàn, xiǎng xiàng kě yǐ dǎ kāi yī shàn mén, què bù néng tì wǒ men wán chéng suǒ yǒu zhǔn bèi。 shū lǐ de lǚ chéng yǐ jīng jié shù, wǒ de wèn tí hái méi yǒu jié shù。 xià yí cì qù tú shū guǎn, wǒ xiǎng zài zhǎo yì běn jiǎng hǎi yáng tàn suǒ de shū。

I realised imagination can open a door without doing all the preparation. The book's journey had ended, but my questions had not. On my next library visit, I wanted a book about ocean exploration.
