Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

灰姑娘

很久以前,有个姑娘失去了母亲。父亲再婚以后,家里来了继母和两个姐姐。她本来盼着多几个家人陪伴,后来却发现,大家把许多繁重的家务都交给她,还常常取笑她。

hěn jiǔ yǐ qián, yǒu gè gū niáng shī qù le mǔ qīn。 fù qīn zài hūn yǐ hòu, jiā lǐ lái le jì mǔ hé liǎng gè jiě jie。 tā běn lái pàn zhe duō jǐ gè jiā rén péi bàn, hòu lái què fā xiàn, dà jiā bǎ xǔ duō fán zhòng de jiā wù dōu jiāo gěi tā, hái cháng cháng qǔ xiào tā。

A girl loses her mother and hopes a stepmother and two sisters will bring companionship. Instead they assign heavy chores and ridicule her.

父亲去世以后,她的日子更难了。天没亮就要起床,挑水、扫地、整理衣服,忙完以后只能坐在炉边休息。身上沾着灰,别人便叫她“灰姑娘”,很少认真听她说话。

fù qīn qù shì yǐ hòu, tā de rì zi gèng nán le。 tiān méi liàng jiù yào qǐ chuáng, tiāo shuǐ、 sǎo dì、 zhěng lǐ yī fú, máng wán yǐ hòu zhǐ néng zuò zài lú biān xiū xi。 shēn shàng zhān zhe huī, bié rén biàn jiào tā “huī gū niang”, hěn shǎo rèn zhēn tīng tā shuō huà。

After her father dies she rises before dawn for water, cleaning and clothes, then rests beside the hearth. People call her Cinderella and rarely listen to her.

灰姑娘也有自己的愿望。她喜欢窗外的音乐,想和别人一起跳舞。遇到常来求食的老奶奶,她会分出一点食物;姐姐们抱怨衣服不好看时,她默默把破的地方补好。

huī gū niang yě yǒu zì jǐ de yuàn wàng。 tā xǐ huan chuāng wài de yīn yuè, xiǎng hé bié rén yì qǐ tiào wǔ。 yù dào cháng lái qiú shí de lǎo nǎi nai, tā huì fēn chū yì diǎn shí wù; jiě jie men bào yuàn yī fú bù hǎo kàn shí, tā mò mò bǎ pò de dì fang bǔ hǎo。

She loves music and wants to dance. She shares food with an elderly visitor and mends her sisters’ clothes despite their complaints.

有一天,宫里送来舞会的邀请。姐姐们挑选衣服,让灰姑娘帮着整理。她问能不能一起去,继母却看着她的旧衣服笑起来,把母女三人需要的东西带走,只留下她看家。

yǒu yì tiān, gōng lǐ sòng lái wǔ huì de yāo qǐng。 jiě jie men tiāo xuǎn yī fú, ràng huī gū niang bāng zhe zhěng lǐ。 tā wèn néng bù néng yì qǐ qù, jì mǔ què kàn zhe tā de jiù yī fú xiào qǐ lai, bǎ mǔ nǚ sān rén xū yào de dōng xi dài zǒu, zhǐ liú xià tā kān jiā。

An invitation to a palace ball arrives. Cinderella helps prepare the sisters, but her stepmother mocks her worn clothes and leaves her at home.

屋里安静下来,门外又响起敲门声。老奶奶看见她难过,问清缘由,便举起手杖:旧衣变成礼服,脚上有了水晶鞋,门口还出现一辆马车。

wū lǐ ān jìng xià lai, mén wài yòu xiǎng qǐ qiāo mén shēng。 lǎo nǎi nai kàn jiàn tā nán guò, wèn qīng yuán yóu, biàn jǔ qǐ shǒu zhàng: jiù yí biàn chéng lǐ fú, jiǎo shàng yǒu le shuǐ jīng xié, mén kǒu hái chū xiàn yī liàng mǎ chē。

A knock interrupts the quiet. Hearing why Cinderella is sad, the old woman raises her wand: old clothes become a gown, glass shoes appear, and a carriage waits outside.

临行以前,奶奶提醒她,半夜十二点必须回来,魔法到时就会结束。灰姑娘认真答应,记住了时间。坐上马车时,她既高兴又有一点紧张,想知道舞会上会遇到什么人。

The visitor warns that the magic ends at midnight. Cinderella promises to return, feeling both excitement and uncertainty as she leaves.

舞会的音乐响起来,王子邀请她跳舞。他们谈话,转了一圈又一圈,灰姑娘慢慢忘了原来的担心。忽然,钟声传来,她抬头一看,才想起临行时答应过的话。

wǔ huì de yīn yuè xiǎng qǐ lai, wáng zǐ yāo qǐng tā tiào wǔ。 tā men tán huà, zhuǎn le yī quān yòu yī quān, huī gū niang màn màn wàng le yuán lái de dān xīn。 hū rán, zhōng shēng chuán lái, tā tái tóu yī kàn, cái xiǎng qǐ lín xíng shí dā ying guò de huà。

Dancing and conversation ease her worries until the clock begins to strike. She suddenly remembers the promise.

她急忙离开,来不及把事情解释清楚。王子追到台阶旁,只找到一只掉落的水晶鞋。马车与礼服又变回原来的样子,可那一晚的音乐和交谈仍然留在灰姑娘的记忆里。

tā jí máng lí kāi, lái bù jí bǎ shì qíng jiě shì qīng chu。 wáng zǐ zhuī dào tái jiē páng, zhǐ zhǎo dào yì zhī diào luò de shuǐ jīng xié。 mǎ chē yǔ lǐ fú yòu biàn huí yuán lái de yàng zi, kě nà yī wǎn de yīn yuè hé jiāo tán réng rán liú zài huī gū niang de jì yì lǐ。

She rushes out before explaining. The prince finds a dropped shoe; the transformations end, but she retains memories of their music and conversation.

后来,王子派人寻找鞋的主人。姐姐们争着试穿,都不合适。灰姑娘也提出想试一试,水晶鞋穿在她脚上正好。来人于是听她说完舞会的经过,确认她就是要找的姑娘。

hòu lái, wáng zǐ pài rén xún zhǎo xié de zhǔ rén。 jiě jie men zhēng zhe shì chuān, dōu bù hé shì。 huī gū niang yě tí chū xiǎng shì yi shì, shuǐ jīng xié chuān zài tā jiǎo shàng zhèng hǎo。 lái rén yú shì tīng tā shuō wán wǔ huì de jīng guò, què rèn tā jiù shì yào zhǎo de gū niáng。

Searchers bring the shoe to the household. It fits neither sister, but Cinderella asks to try it, then explains the ball and is identified.

王子向她伸出手,姐姐们却低下了头。灰姑娘拿出另一只水晶鞋,放在失而复得的那一只旁边,两只鞋在阳光里闪着光。

wáng zǐ xiàng tā shēn chū shǒu, jiě jie men què dī xià le tóu。 huī gū niang ná chū lìng yì zhī shuǐ jīng xié, fàng zài shī ér fù de de nà yì zhī páng biān, liǎng zhī xié zài yáng guāng lǐ shǎn zhe guāng。

The prince offered his hand as her stepsisters lowered their heads. Cinderella placed her other glass slipper beside the recovered one, and both shone in the sunlight.

灰姑娘离开了原来被欺负的生活,走出门时,她回头望了一眼炉边的旧椅子,再看看手里的水晶鞋,微笑着踏上新的路。

huī gū niang lí kāi le yuán lái bèi qī fu de shēng huó, zǒu chū mén shí, tā huí tóu wàng le yī yǎn lú biān de jiù yǐ zi, zài kàn kan shǒu lǐ de shuǐ jīng xié, wēi xiào zhe tà shàng xīn de lù。

Cinderella leaves the life in which she was mistreated, glances back at the old chair by the stove, looks at the glass shoe and smiles as she begins a new journey.
