Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

Following the correct cutting steps helps prevent small sections from breaking.

剪纸

美术课上,老师展示几张剪纸,有花朵、动物,也有节日里常见的文字。小雨发现,纸上的空白和留下的部分,一起组成了图案。

měi shù kè shàng, lǎo shī zhǎn shì jǐ zhāng jiǎn zhǐ, yǒu huā duǒ、 dòng wù, yě yǒu jié rì lǐ cháng jiàn de wén zì。 xiǎo yǔ fā xiàn, zhǐ shàng de kòng bái hé liú xià de bù fèn, yì qǐ zǔ chéng le tú àn。

In art class, Yu notices that removed spaces and retained paper together create the flowers, animals and festival characters in paper cuts.

她想做一只蝴蝶,先把纸对折,在折边旁画半个身体和一侧翅膀。老师请她指出,哪里必须连接,哪里可以剪掉,不能只看外面的轮廓。

tā xiǎng zuò yì zhī hú dié, xiān bǎ zhǐ duì zhé, zài zhé biān páng huà bàn gè shēn tǐ hé yī cè chì bǎng。 lǎo shī qǐng tā zhǐ chū, nǎ lǐ bì xū lián jiē, nǎ lǐ kě yǐ jiǎn diào, bù néng zhǐ kàn wài miàn de lún kuò。

She folds paper and sketches half a butterfly, identifying necessary connections as well as areas to remove, rather than looking only at the outline.

第一次展开时,两只翅膀分开了,身体留在另一边。她发现自己剪断了连接的位置,便在草稿上做记号,重新设计细节。

dì yī cì zhǎn kāi shí, liǎng zhī chì bǎng fēn kāi le, shēn tǐ liú zài lìng yì biān。 tā fā xiàn zì jǐ jiǎn duàn le lián jiē de wèi zhì, biàn zài cǎo gǎo shàng zuò jì hào, chóng xīn shè jì xì jié。

Her first attempt separates the wings from the body; she identifies the severed connection, marks it on the draft and redesigns the details.

第二次,她保留了连接处,慢慢剪出花纹。展开以后,两边形状对应,却不是所有剪纸都必须对称,选择要符合自己的设计。

dì èr cì, tā bǎo liú le lián jiē chù, màn màn jiǎn chū huā wén。 zhǎn kāi yǐ hòu, liǎng biān xíng zhuàng duì yìng, què bú shì suǒ yǒu jiǎn zhǐ dōu bì xū duì chèn, xuǎn zé yào fú hé zì jǐ de shè jì。

Keeping the connection produces matching sides, though she learns that symmetry is a design choice rather than a requirement for every paper cut.

同学问:“蝴蝶的翅膀为什么有小圆点?”小雨拿起旁边的花瓣,笑着说:“我看见花上的点,想把它们也留在蝴蝶身上。”

tóng xué wèn:“hú dié de chì bǎng wèi shén me yǒu xiǎo yuán diǎn?” xiǎo yǔ ná qǐ páng biān de huā bàn, xiào zhe shuō:“wǒ kàn jiàn huā shàng de diǎn, xiǎng bǎ tā men yě liú zài hú dié shēn shàng。”

“Why are there dots on its wings?” asked a classmate. Picking up a petal, Xiaoyu said, “I saw dots on the flower and wanted to put them on my butterfly too.”

她把蝴蝶贴在窗边,阳光从剪开的空隙透进来。第一次剪坏的纸还放在桌上,她没有扔掉,而是把它收进画册。

tā bǎ hú dié tiē zài chuāng biān, yáng guāng cóng jiǎn kāi de kòng xì tòu jìn lái。 dì yī cì jiǎn huài de zhǐ hái fàng zài zhuō shàng, tā méi yǒu rēng diào, ér shì bǎ tā shōu jìn huà cè。

She placed the butterfly by the window, letting sunlight through its openings. She kept her first, unsuccessful attempt in her sketchbook.

老师也介绍,剪纸在不同地方有不同风格。了解一种作品时,可以问它在什么场合使用、表达什么愿望,而不把全部传统说成一样。

lǎo shī yě jiè shào, jiǎn zhǐ zài bù tóng dì fang yǒu bù tóng fēng gé。 liǎo jiě yì zhǒng zuò pǐn shí, kě yǐ wèn tā zài shén me chǎng hé shǐ yòng、 biǎo dá shén me yuàn wàng, ér bù bǎ quán bù chuán tǒng shuō chéng yí yàng。

The teacher explains regional styles, inviting questions about occasions and wishes represented without treating all traditions as identical.

小雨把两次作品放在一起,向同学说明哪里失败、怎样改进。她觉得,一个不完美的尝试,只要留下分析,也能帮助下一次创作。

xiǎo yǔ bǎ liǎng cì zuò pǐn fàng zài yì qǐ, xiàng tóng xué shuō míng nǎ lǐ shī bài、 zěn yàng gǎi jìn。 tā jué de, yí ge bù wán měi de cháng shì, zhǐ yào liú xià fēn xī, yě néng bāng zhù xià yí cì chuàng zuò。

Yu compares both attempts, showing how identifying a failed detail can improve the next creation.
