Recognise the whole shape
Begin with yi, wu, yu and yue on the focus cards; then try you. The complete reference set is zhi, chi, shi, ri, zi, ci, si, yi, wu, yu, ye, yue, yuan, yin, yun and ying. Revisit these in small groups rather than memorising the list at once. Add the tone you hear, rather than reading English letter names.
When there is no initial
The final i is written yi and u is written wu when forming a syllable on their own. Finals starting with i or u also use y/w conventions: hear yǒu, wǒ, yuè and yuán in real words.
Keep ü in mind
yu, yue, yuan and yun use ü-related finals with the dots omitted. yin and ying keep written i. y and w help spell these syllables; they are not extra syllables to pronounce.
Syllables and words use the original course voice. Separate recordings are used only for simple, compound and nasal finals in the sound reference. For words, focus on the sound named on the card.
Record the two examples marked Practice 1 and Practice 2. Use the other examples whenever you want extra practice.
