Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

印度奇观

An original fictional travel narrative set in Jaipur.

小雨来到印度的斋普尔,街边一些建筑带着粉红的色调,阳光把墙面照得更加明亮。

xiǎo yǔ lái dào yìn dù de zhāi pǔ ěr, jiē biān yì xiē jiàn zhù dài zhe fěn hóng de sè diào, yáng guāng bǎ qiáng miàn zhào de gèng jiā míng liàng。

Xiaoyu reached Jaipur in India, where sunlight brightened the pink tones of buildings along the street.

她沿街望去,门窗、屋顶和装饰有不同的线条,同一种颜色也因为光线与位置而显得深浅不一。

tā yán jiē wàng qù, mén chuāng、 wū dǐng hé zhuāng shì yǒu bù tóng de xiàn tiáo, tóng yì zhǒng yán sè yě yīn wèi guāng xiàn yǔ wèi zhì ér xiǎn de shēn qiǎn bù yī。

Windows, roofs and ornaments have different outlines, while the same colour varies with light and position.

花园里,草木围着小路生长,清晨的空气还带着凉意,一只孔雀在花丛旁慢慢走过。

huā yuán lǐ, cǎo mù wéi zhe xiǎo lù shēng zhǎng, qīng chén de kōng qì hái dài zhe liáng yì, yì zhī kǒng què zài huā cóng páng màn màn zǒu guò。

In a garden, plants border a path, and a peacock walks beside flowers in the cool morning air.

它停下来,尾羽轻轻展开,颜色随着角度改变,小雨没有急着追近,而是站在原处观察。

tā tíng xià lai, wěi yǔ qīng qīng zhǎn kāi, yán sè suí zhe jiǎo dù gǎi biàn, xiǎo yǔ méi yǒu jí zhe zhuī jìn, ér shì zhàn zài yuán chù guān chá。

It pauses and gently opens its tail, whose colours change with angle; Xiaoyu watches without rushing closer.

黄昏时,光线又不同,树影拉长,花丛渐渐暗下来,同一条小路也有了另一种样子。

huáng hūn shí, guāng xiàn yòu bù tóng, shù yǐng lā cháng, huā cóng jiàn jiàn àn xià lai, tóng yì tiáo xiǎo lù yě yǒu le lìng yì zhǒng yàng zi。

At dusk, shadows lengthen and the flowers darken, giving the same path another appearance.

花园里的一位工作人员提着水桶走过,停下来浇花。小雨让开小路,看见水珠落在花瓣上,刚才暗一些的颜色又亮起来。

huā yuán lǐ de yí wèi gōng zuò rén yuán tí zhe shuǐ tǒng zǒu guò, tíng xià lai jiāo huā。 xiǎo yǔ ràng kāi xiǎo lù, kàn jiàn shuǐ zhū luò zài huā bàn shàng, gāng cái àn yì xiē de yán sè yòu liàng qǐ lai。

A gardener paused to water flowers. Xiaoyu stepped aside and watched droplets brighten their petals.

抬头看树枝,她起初以为挂着许多果子,可仔细一看,才发现那些形状其实是倒挂的蝙蝠。

tái tóu kàn shù zhī, tā qǐ chū yǐ wéi guà zhe xǔ duō guǒ zi, kě zǐ xì yī kàn, cái fā xiàn nà xiē xíng zhuàng qí shí shì dào guà de biān fú。

Looking up, she first mistakes hanging shapes for fruit before recognising upside-down bats.

这个发现使她笑起来,也让她知道,第一眼看到的轮廓,还需要结合细节才能说明白。

zhè ge fā xiàn shǐ tā xiào qǐ lai, yě ràng tā zhī dào, dì yī yǎn kàn dào de lún kuò, hái xū yào jié hé xì jié cái néng shuō míng bái。

The discovery makes her smile and shows why an initial outline needs closer examination.

一阵风穿过树枝,倒挂的蝙蝠轻轻晃动。一只展开翅膀,离开原来的位置,小雨抬起头,目光跟着它的身影转向远处。

yí zhèn fēng chuān guò shù zhī, dào guà de biān fú qīng qīng huàng dòng。 yì zhī zhǎn kāi chì bǎng, lí kāi yuán lái de wèi zhì, xiǎo yǔ tái qǐ tóu, mù guāng gēn zhe tā de shēn yǐng zhuǎn xiàng yuǎn chù。

Wind passed through the branches, gently moving the hanging bats. One spread its wings, and Xiaoyu watched it fly away.

她在本子上画了两栏,一栏是第一眼以为的东西,另一栏是后来确认的东西。朋友看着蝙蝠那一页,也回想起自己曾把远处的树影当成一个人;两人便约好,下次先观察,再给新的发现起名字。

tā zài běn zi shàng huà le liǎng lán, yī lán shì dì yī yǎn yǐ wéi de dōng xi, lìng yī lán shì hòu lái què rèn de dōng xi。 péng yǒu kàn zhe biān fú nà yí yè, yě huí xiǎng qǐ zì jǐ céng bǎ yuǎn chù de shù yǐng dàng chéng yí ge rén; liǎng rén biàn yuē hǎo, xià cì xiān guān chá, zài gěi xīn de fā xiàn qǐ míng zi。

She separates first impressions from later discoveries. Her friend remembers mistaking a distant tree shadow for a person, and they agree to observe before naming.

向导讲起当地的生活,她认真听完,发现自己觉得新奇的地方,可能正是别人熟悉的日常。

xiàng dǎo jiǎng qǐ dāng dì de shēng huó, tā rèn zhēn tīng wán, fā xiàn zì jǐ jué de xīn qí de dì fang, kě néng zhèng shì bié rén shú xī de rì cháng。

Listening to the guide, she realises what seems novel to her may be someone else’s everyday life.

回到休息的地方,她先画出建筑的颜色,再画孔雀和树上的蝙蝠,把不同场景分成几页。

huí dào xiū xi de dì fang, tā xiān huà chū jiàn zhù de yán sè, zài huà kǒng què hé shù shàng de biān fú, bǎ bù tóng chǎng jǐng fēn chéng jǐ yè。

At her rest stop, she draws the buildings, peacock and bats on separate pages.

朋友问她最记得什么,她说:“我记得那棵树,原以为是果子,后来才看清原来是动物。”

péng yǒu wèn tā zuì jì de shén me, tā shuō:“wǒ jì de nà kē shù, yuán yǐ wéi shì guǒ zi, hòu lái cái kàn qīng yuán lái shì dòng wù。”

A friend asks what she remembers best. “The tree whose shapes I mistook for fruit before seeing they were animals,” she answers.

旅行本最后一页,她留下一行字:“看见不只是认出一个名字,还要给自己时间,重新看看。”

lǚ xíng běn zuì hòu yí yè, tā liú xià yī xíng zì:“kàn jiàn bù zhǐ shì rèn chū yí ge míng zi, hái yào gěi zì jǐ shí jiān, chóng xīn kàn kan。”

On the last notebook page she writes, “Seeing means more than naming something; it also means taking time to look again.”
