Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

时间就是生命

一天,小杰在纸上列出明天想做的事情:读中文、完成作业、练球、看故事书,还要和朋友一起搭模型。

yì tiān, xiǎo jié zài zhǐ shàng liè chū míng tiān xiǎng zuò de shì qíng: dú zhōng wén、 wán chéng zuò yè、 liàn qiú、 kàn gù shì shū, hái yào hé péng yǒu yì qǐ dā mó xíng。

One day, Jie lists the next day’s plans: Chinese reading, homework, ball practice, storybooks and building a model with a friend.

爸爸让他在每件事旁边写上大约需要多久。小杰这才发现,纸上有很多愿望,下午却只有几个小时。搭模型还需要准备材料,去球场也要算上来回的路程。

bà ba ràng tā zài měi jiàn shì páng biān xiě shàng dà yuē xū yào duō jiǔ。 xiǎo jié zhè cái fā xiàn, zhǐ shàng yǒu hěn duō yuàn wàng, xià wǔ què zhǐ yǒu jǐ gè xiǎo shí。 dā mó xíng hái xū yào zhǔn bèi cái liào, qù qiú chǎng yě yào suàn shàng lái huí de lù chéng。

Estimating durations reveals that a few afternoon hours cannot hold every wish. Materials and travel also take time.

他看见密密麻麻的计划,忽然发现自己只写了想做什么,却没有写什么时候开始、需要多少时间。

tā kàn jiàn mì mì má má de jì huà, hū rán fā xiàn zì jǐ zhǐ xiě le xiǎng zuò shén me, què méi yǒu xiě shén me shí hou kāi shǐ、 xū yào duō shǎo shí jiān。

Looking at the crowded plan, he realises he has listed what to do but not when to begin or how much time each task needs.

他原来把读中文写成“读得越多越好”,现在改成读完两段,标出三个不懂的词,再复述主要内容。事情的范围清楚了,做完以后也能检查有没有达到目标。

tā yuán lái bǎ dú zhōng wén xiě chéng “dú de yuè duō yuè hǎo”, xiàn zài gǎi chéng dú wán liǎng duàn, biāo chū sān gè bù dǒng de cí, zài fù shù zhǔ yào nèi róng。 shì qíng de fàn wéi qīng chu le, zuò wán yǐ hòu yě néng jiǎn chá yǒu méi yǒu dá dào mù biāo。

He replaces “read as much as possible” with two paragraphs, three unfamiliar expressions and a summary, creating a checkable task.

朋友说下午两点来搭模型。小杰却把练球也安排在两点,还没有告诉对方。发现时间重叠以后,他先联系朋友,商量改到三点半,而不是让朋友白白等着。

péng yǒu shuō xià wǔ liǎng diǎn lái dā mó xíng。 xiǎo jié què bǎ liàn qiú yě ān pái zài liǎng diǎn, hái méi yǒu gào su duì fāng。 fā xiàn shí jiān chóng dié yǐ hòu, tā xiān lián xì péng yǒu, shāng liáng gǎi dào sān diǎn bàn, ér bú shì ràng péng yǒu bái bái děng zhe。

A clash between model-building and practice requires an early conversation with his friend. They agree on 3:30 rather than leave someone waiting.

第二天下午,他读中文时想起一段有趣的视频,点开以后又看了好几段。再抬头看钟,已经过了给阅读安排的时间。他把这段经过记下,发现自己的注意力转移了。

dì èr tiān xià wǔ, tā dú zhōng wén shí xiǎng qǐ yí duàn yǒu qù de shì pín, diǎn kāi yǐ hòu yòu kàn le hǎo jǐ duàn。 zài tái tóu kàn zhōng, yǐ jīng guò le gěi yuè dú ān pái de shí jiān。 tā bǎ zhè duàn jīng guò jì xià, fā xiàn zì jǐ de zhù yì lì zhuǎn yí le。

A video interrupts Chinese reading and leads to several more. Checking the clock reveals that the allocated time has passed; he records the distraction.

下一次,他把需要用的词语表先打开,把其它页面暂时关掉。读完一段便停下来复述,不懂的地方集中记在旁边,再选择什么时候向老师请教。这样,问题不会把每一句都打断。

xià yí cì, tā bǎ xū yào yòng de cí yǔ biǎo xiān dǎ kāi, bǎ qí tā yè miàn zàn shí guān diào。 dú wán yí duàn biàn tíng xià lai fù shù, bù dǒng de dì fang jí zhōng jì zài páng biān, zài xuǎn zé shén me shí hou xiàng lǎo shī qǐng jiào。 zhè yàng, wèn tí bú huì bǎ měi yī jù dōu dǎ duàn。

Next time he prepares the word list, closes other pages and gathers questions beside the text, choosing a later time to ask rather than interrupt every sentence.

计划里也有吃饭、休息和活动的时间。练球回来,他先喝水,坐一会儿,再开始搭模型。朋友带来的零件缺了一块,两个人重新商量,先完成能够拼好的底座。

jì huà lǐ yě yǒu chī fàn、 xiū xi hé huó dòng de shí jiān。 liàn qiú huí lái, tā xiān hē shuǐ, zuò yí huì er, zài kāi shǐ dā mó xíng。 péng yǒu dài lái de líng jiàn quē le yí kuài, liǎng gè rén chóng xīn shāng liáng, xiān wán chéng néng gòu pīn hǎo de dǐ zuò。

Food, rest and activity are part of the plan. After practice the friends discover a missing piece and decide to finish the available model base.

晚上,小杰比较原来的安排和实际经过,圈出没有估计路程的地方,也留下读懂两段故事、按约见面这些已经完成的事情。

wǎn shàng, xiǎo jié bǐ jiào yuán lái de ān pái hé shí jì jīng guò, quān chū mò yǒu gū jì lù chéng de dì fang, yě liú xià dú dǒng liǎng duàn gù shì、 àn yuē jiàn miàn zhè xiē yǐ jīng wán chéng de shì qíng。

In the evening, Jie compares plan and outcome, noting overlooked travel time and completed reading and meetings.

他把明天的计划改得短了一些,每一项却更具体。珍惜时间在这一天有了看得见的样子:弄清需要,遵守约定,注意影响,再根据实际情况调整。

tā bǎ míng tiān de jì huà gǎi de duǎn le yì xiē, měi yí xiàng què gèng jù tǐ。 zhēn xī shí jiān zài zhè yì tiān yǒu le kàn de jiàn de yàng zi: nòng qīng xū yào, zūn shǒu yuē dìng, zhù yì yǐng xiǎng, zài gēn jù shí jì qíng kuàng tiáo zhěng。

Tomorrow’s shorter plan is more specific: identify needs, honour agreements, notice effects and adjust to actual circumstances.
