Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

Two idioms: a beginning and a small gift

Keep the creation myth and the gift story distinct. Compare physical weight with the effort and intention represented by the feather; a myth offers an imaginative account. You can pause after any study block and continue later.

  • Describe the sequence in the Pangu myth.
  • Retell why the swan flies away.
  • Explain why the feather still conveys care.

成语故事

传说中,天地混在一起,像一个巨大的蛋,盘古就在里面,周围一片昏暗,分不清哪里是天,哪里是地。

chuán shuō zhōng, tiān dì hùn zài yì qǐ, xiàng yí ge jù dà de dàn, pán gǔ jiù zài lǐ miàn, zhōu wéi yí piàn hūn àn, fēn bù qīng nǎ lǐ shì tiān, nǎ lǐ shì dì。

In the legend, heaven and earth are mixed like a huge egg around Pangu, in darkness where neither can be distinguished.

后来,盘古站起来,把天和地分开。他脚踏大地,头顶天空,继续支撑;天越来越高,地越来越厚,他的身体也随之长大。

hòu lái, pán gǔ zhàn qǐ lái, bǎ tiān hé dì fēn kāi。 tā jiǎo tà dà dì, tóu dǐng tiān kōng, jì xù zhī chēng; tiān yuè lái yuè gāo, dì yuè lái yuè hòu, tā de shēn tǐ yě suí zhī zhǎng dà。

Pangu stands and separates heaven and earth, supporting them with feet below and head above as sky, earth and his body grow.

他倒下以后,气息变成风云,声音变成雷声,眼睛化作太阳和月亮,身体也化成了山川、草木,世界有了新的模样。

tā dǎo xià yǐ hòu, qì xī biàn chéng fēng yún, shēng yīn biàn chéng léi shēng, yǎn jīng huà zuò tài yáng hé yuè liàng, shēn tǐ yě huà chéng le shān chuān、 cǎo mù, shì jiè yǒu le xīn de mú yàng。

When he falls, his breath becomes wind and clouds, his voice thunder and his eyes the sun and moon; his body becomes mountains, rivers and plants.

天空有了光,大地有了山,河水在低处流动;原先混在一起的昏暗,终于变成了辽阔而多彩的世界。

tiān kōng yǒu le guāng, dà dì yǒu le shān, hé shuǐ zài dī chù liú dòng; yuán xiān hùn zài yì qǐ de hūn àn, zhōng yú biàn chéng le liáo kuò ér duō cǎi de shì jiè。

Light fills the sky, mountains rise from the land and rivers flow below; the former darkness becomes a vast, colourful world.

“千里送鹅毛”讲的是另一种困难。古时,一个人带着白天鹅走很远的路去献礼。途中,天鹅的羽毛弄脏了,他来到湖边,想让它洗一洗,便打开了笼子。

“qiān lǐ sòng é máo” jiǎng de shì lìng yì zhǒng kùn nán。 gǔ shí, yí ge rén dài zhe bái tiān é zǒu hěn yuǎn de lù qù xiàn lǐ。 tú zhōng, tiān é de yǔ máo nòng zāng le, tā lái dào hú biān, xiǎng ràng tā xǐ yī xǐ, biàn dǎ kāi le lóng zi。

The other tale concerns a messenger carrying a swan as a gift. He opens its cage beside a lake to let the dirty bird wash.

天鹅飞走,留下几根羽毛。送礼人又着急又难过,后来捡起一根,把事情的经过和自己远道而来的心意一同说明。轻轻的羽毛,承载了路途与情意的故事。

tiān é fēi zǒu, liú xià jǐ gēn yǔ máo。 sòng lǐ rén yòu zháo jí yòu nán guò, hòu lái jiǎn qǐ yì gēn, bǎ shì qíng de jīng guò hé zì jǐ yuǎn dào ér lái de xīn yì yī tóng shuō míng。 qīng qīng de yǔ máo, chéng zài le lù tú yǔ qíng yì de gù shì。

The swan escapes and leaves feathers. The messenger takes one and explains the journey and his intention, giving the light feather a larger meaning.

送礼人不敢随便编造事情,便把羽毛好好收起,继续向目的地走去,心里想着怎样说明一路上的经过。

sòng lǐ rén bù gǎn suí biàn biān zào shì qíng, biàn bǎ yǔ máo hǎo hǎo shōu qǐ, jì xù xiàng mù dì dì zǒu qù, xīn lǐ xiǎng zhe zěn yàng shuō míng yí lù shàng de jīng guò。

The traveller carefully keeps the feather and continues, considering how to explain the journey honestly.

到达以后,他捧出鹅毛,说:“天鹅飞走了,我没有送来原来的礼物,可这根羽毛带着我远道而来的心意。”

dào dá yǐ hòu, tā pěng chū é máo, shuō:“tiān é fēi zǒu le, wǒ méi yǒu sòng lái yuán lái de lǐ wù, kě zhè gēn yǔ máo dài zhe wǒ yuǎn dào ér lái de xīn yì。”

On arrival, he presents the feather: “The swan flew away, but this feather carries my sincere intention across the long journey.”

收礼的人听完,没有只看羽毛的轻重,而是认真询问他走过哪些地方、经历哪些困难。

shōu lǐ de rén tīng wán, méi yǒu zhǐ kàn yǔ máo de qīng zhòng, ér shì rèn zhēn xún wèn tā zǒu guò nǎ xiē dì fang、 jīng lì nǎ xiē kùn nán。

The recipient asks about the places and difficulties of his journey rather than judging only the feather’s weight.

那根轻轻的鹅毛被留下来,人们记住的,也不只是一个丢失的礼物,而是一段路途和真诚的情意。

nà gēn qīng qīng de é máo bèi liú xià lai, rén men jì zhù de, yě bù zhǐ shì yí ge diū shī de lǐ wù, ér shì yí duàn lù tú hé zhēn chéng de qíng yì。

The light feather is kept, recalling not merely a lost gift but a long journey and sincere affection.
