Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

Microphone setup

What if microphone access is blocked?

Tap Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. If access was denied, change this website’s microphone permission to Allow or Ask. Your device must also let the browser use its microphone. Return to the lesson and try Record again; reload only if your browser requires it. Reloading clears voice clips in this tab.

Open Mandarin Meadow directly in your browser if recording is unavailable in an embedded window. If the microphone is busy, close other apps using it. For children, a parent or carer can help with permission settings.

A Chinese lesson: questions that lead somewhere

Use clues to narrow possible answers.

Goals & study plan
A Chinese lesson: questions that lead somewhere

A clue narrows possibilities without always proving an answer. Compare candidates, ask a useful question and revise a guess when new information appears. You can pause after any study block and continue later.

  • Use clues to narrow possible answers.
  • Explain a choice rather than guess without support.
  • Describe how a revised answer can reflect careful thought.

一堂有趣的中文课

中文课上,老师拿出一个盖着布的盒子,没有马上告诉大家里面是什么。她请每个人先提出一个能够帮助判断的问题。

zhōng wén kè shàng, lǎo shī ná chū yí ge gài zhe bù de hé zi, méi yǒu mǎ shàng gào su dà jiā lǐ miàn shì shén me。 tā qǐng měi gè rén xiān tí chū yí ge néng gòu bāng zhù pàn duàn de wèn tí。

In Chinese class, the teacher brings out a covered box and asks students to pose a useful question before revealing its contents.

小杰问,里面的东西可以吃吗?老师回答不可以。小雨问,它是不是学习用品?老师点头,大家把猜测的范围缩小了。

xiǎo jié wèn, lǐ miàn de dōng xi kě yǐ chī ma? lǎo shī huí dá bù kě yǐ。 xiǎo yǔ wèn, tā shì bú shì xué xí yòng pǐn? lǎo shī diǎn tóu, dà jiā bǎ cāi cè de fàn wéi suō xiǎo le。

Jie asks whether it can be eaten; Yu asks whether it is school equipment. The answers narrow their guesses.

有人立刻喊是铅笔,老师却问,你的理由是什么?小杰说,学习用品很多,现在的线索还不足以确定答案。

yǒu rén lì kè hǎn shì qiān bǐ, lǎo shī què wèn, nǐ de lǐ yóu shì shén me? xiǎo jié shuō, xué xí yòng pǐn hěn duō, xiàn zài de xiàn suǒ hái bù zú yǐ què dìng dá àn。

When someone shouts pencil, the teacher asks for a reason. Jie points out that many things fit the clues, so certainty is premature.

接着,老师让他们听盒子轻轻晃动的声音,又说这个东西是金属做的,可以帮助把两张纸连在一起。小雨开始想到另一种可能。

jiē zhe, lǎo shī ràng tā men tīng hé zi qīng qīng huàng dòng de shēng yīn, yòu shuō zhè ge dōng xi shì jīn shǔ zuò de, kě yǐ bāng zhù bǎ liǎng zhāng zhǐ lián zài yì qǐ。 xiǎo yǔ kāi shǐ xiǎng dào lìng yì zhǒng kě néng。

The teacher gently shakes the box and says the object is metal and can join two sheets of paper. Yu considers another possibility.

小雨在纸上写了两个候选答案,一边是胶水,一边是回形针。她又问:“它使用以后还能取下来吗?”老师回答可以。小雨于是划掉一个答案,把新线索写在留下的答案旁边。

xiǎo yǔ zài zhǐ shàng xiě le liǎng gè hòu xuǎn dá àn, yì biān shì jiāo shuǐ, yì biān shì huí xíng zhēn。 tā yòu wèn:“tā shǐ yòng yǐ hòu hái néng qǔ xià lai ma?” lǎo shī huí dá kě yǐ。 xiǎo yǔ yú shì huà diào yí ge dá àn, bǎ xīn xiàn suǒ xiě zài liú xià de dá àn páng biān。

Yu writes two candidates—glue and paper clips—and asks whether the object can be removed after use. The answer is yes. She crosses out one candidate and notes the clue beside the other.

盒子打开,里面是一盒回形针。有的同学猜对了,有的没有,但老师请两组同学都解释自己怎样使用线索。

hé zi dǎ kāi, lǐ miàn shì yì hé huí xíng zhēn。 yǒu de tóng xué cāi duì le, yǒu de méi yǒu, dàn lǎo shī qǐng liǎng zǔ tóng xué dōu jiě shì zì jǐ zěn yàng shǐ yòng xiàn suǒ。

The box contains paper clips. Both students who guessed correctly and those who did not explain how they used the clues.

小杰说,自己的第一个答案不够准确,后来听到连接纸张,就应该重新比较。改变答案并不表示没有认真思考。

xiǎo jié shuō, zì jǐ de dì yī ge dá àn bù gòu zhǔn què, hòu lái tīng dào lián jiē zhǐ zhāng, jiù yīng gāi chóng xīn bǐ jiào。 gǎi biàn dá àn bìng bù biǎo shì méi yǒu rèn zhēn sī kǎo。

Jie says the first guess was imprecise and the paper-joining clue called for a comparison; changing an answer can reflect careful thought.

大家把问题分成只求答案的问题和帮助理解的问题。老师提醒,有时一个清楚的问题,比许多没有根据的猜测更有价值。

dà jiā bǎ wèn tí fēn chéng zhǐ qiú dá àn de wèn tí hé bāng zhù lǐ jiě de wèn tí。 lǎo shī tí xǐng, yǒu shí yí ge qīng chu de wèn tí, bǐ xǔ duō méi yǒu gēn jù de cāi cè gèng yǒu jià zhí。

The class distinguishes questions seeking an answer from those building understanding; one clear question can be worth more than many unsupported guesses.

下课前,小雨用既有趣又有道理评价这堂课。她还写下以后讨论时要做的事:说明理由,听取新信息,必要时修改判断。

xià kè qián, xiǎo yǔ yòng jì yǒu qù yòu yǒu dào lǐ píng jià zhè táng kè。 tā hái xiě xià yǐ hòu tǎo lùn shí yào zuò de shì: shuō míng lǐ yóu, tīng qǔ xīn xìn xī, bì yào shí xiū gǎi pàn duàn。

Yu describes the lesson as both interesting and meaningful, resolving to explain reasons, listen to new information and revise judgments when needed.
