Help & FAQ 常见问题

Practising Mandarin

How do Listen, Record, Play mine and Compare work?

Listen plays the example. You can skip listening and record straight away. Tap Record, say the item, then tap Stop. A successful recording completes that item’s task. Play mine plays your voice; Compare plays the model, then your voice.

“Recorded” means you practised; it is not a pronunciation score. Listen for tones, rhythm and light syllables. You can record again. Try a few items at a time and take a break when needed.

Where do my recordings and completed tasks go?

Voice clips stay in this browser tab. Reloading, closing the tab or leaving the website clears them. Opening this help page keeps your clips available. Completed tasks remain saved even when a voice clip is gone, so Play mine and Compare become available after a new recording.

Learners have separate progress. Use the learner’s progress backup or sign-in sync to carry supported learning progress between devices. Voice clips are not included in backups or sync.

How can I read a longer text?

Use the Listen button beside each part. Pause or stop with the audio controls, then continue when ready. Pinyin + English and Useful expressions provide optional support. Short texts have one Listen button.

How do character animations and tracing work?

Flip a character card to see the writing controls. Replay shows the strokes; Trace lets you try them. The lesson’s writing focus identifies which characters to practise first. Printable pages are available in Practice.

Choosing a course & reviewing

How do I choose a starting point?

Each course page lists what to know before starting and what you will practise. Choose by what you can understand and do in Mandarin. Later literature and social themes are intended for teenagers and adults ready for extended reading and discussion; language support remains available.

How do the cumulative reviews work?

Open Review & connect on a course page, or use the extra review in the Review tab after each study block. Earlier vocabulary, sentence patterns and readings return in short recall questions, followed by a written response. First choices and retries remain saved. The written reflection is self-reviewed, with room for different supported answers.

Can I spread a long reading over several days?

Yes. Open Goals & study plan for reading sessions linked to each part. Read one part in a sitting, then connect the parts and complete the reading tasks when ready. The short Course 7 bridge readings have optional longer versions; the longer version is not required.

Chinese typing

How do I type Chinese and use written responses?

Add a Simplified Chinese Pinyin keyboard in your device’s keyboard or language settings. On iPhone/iPad, look under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. On Android, use your keyboard’s Languages settings. On Windows or Mac, use language or input-source settings. Select the Chinese keyboard, type pinyin, then choose the intended characters.

Later readings include a short written response. Drafts are saved to the active learner’s progress as you type. You can save a response, compare it with a possible supporting detail, and revise it. These responses are not automatically graded; different reasoned answers can work. Progress backup and supported sign-in sync include saved responses.

月光奏鸣曲

A literary legend about Beethoven, not a documented account of the sonata’s composition.

在这则关于《月光曲》的传说中,一个夜晚,贝多芬沿着小镇的街道散步,忽然听见一间小屋里传来断断续续的钢琴声。

zài zhè zé guān yú 《 yuè guāng qū 》 de chuán shuō zhōng, yí ge yè wǎn, bèi duō fēn yán zhe xiǎo zhèn de jiē dào sàn bù, hū rán tīng jiàn yì jiān xiǎo wū lǐ chuán lái duàn duàn xù xù de gāng qín shēng。

In this legend about the Moonlight Sonata, Beethoven hears halting piano music from a cottage while walking through a small town one evening.

他停下脚步,听见一个姑娘叹息,说自己很想听贝多芬亲自演奏,却买不起音乐会的票。

tā tíng xià jiǎo bù, tīng jiàn yí ge gū niáng tàn xī, shuō zì jǐ hěn xiǎng tīng bèi duō fēn qīn zì yǎn zòu, què mǎi bù qǐ yīn yuè huì de piào。

He stops and hears a girl sigh that she would love to hear Beethoven perform but cannot afford a concert ticket.

屋里的哥哥安慰她,姑娘又轻声说:“我只是随便说说,你别难过。”

wū lǐ de gē ge ān wèi tā, gū niáng yòu qīng shēng shuō:“wǒ zhǐ shì suí biàn shuō shuō, nǐ bié nán guò。”

Her brother comforts her, and she says softly, “I was only wishing; please do not feel sad.”

贝多芬敲门走进去,看见一架旧钢琴,也发现姑娘的眼睛看不见。

bèi duō fēn qiāo mén zǒu jìn qu, kàn jiàn yī jià jiù gāng qín, yě fā xiàn gū niáng de yǎn jīng kàn bú jiàn。

Beethoven knocks and enters, seeing an old piano and realising that the girl cannot see.

小屋里的灯光很弱,哥哥把椅子移开一点,好让客人坐到琴边。姑娘听见陌生人的脚步,先有些迟疑,随后把刚才练习的地方说清楚。她说自己一直想听懂曲子怎样连接。

xiǎo wū lǐ de dēng guāng hěn ruò, gē ge bǎ yǐ zi yí kāi yì diǎn, hǎo ràng kè rén zuò dào qín biān。 gū niáng tīng jiàn mò shēng rén de jiǎo bù, xiān yǒu xiē chí yí, suí hòu bǎ gāng cái liàn xí de dì fang shuō qīng chǔ。 tā shuō zì jǐ yì zhí xiǎng tīng dǒng qǔ zi zěn yàng lián jiē。

The brother moves a chair to make room at the piano. At first hesitant, the girl explains the passage she has practised and says she wants to understand how the music connects.

他坐到琴前,弹起姑娘刚才练习的曲子,熟悉的旋律在小屋里流动。

tā zuò dào qín qián, tán qǐ gū niáng gāng cái liàn xí de qǔ zi, shú xī de xuán lǜ zài xiǎo wū lǐ liú dòng。

He sits down and plays the piece she was practising, filling the cottage with its familiar melody.

姑娘听得入神,问:“您弹得这样好,您是不是贝多芬?”

gū niáng tīng de rù shén, wèn:“nín tán de zhè yàng hǎo, nín shì bú shì bèi duō fēn?”

Absorbed in the music, she asks, “You play so beautifully; are you Beethoven?”

他微笑着,没有急着离开,又为兄妹俩弹起新的旋律。

tā wēi xiào zhe, méi yǒu jí zhe lí kāi, yòu wèi xiōng mèi liǎ tán qǐ xīn de xuán lǜ。

He smiles, stays, and begins another melody for the brother and sister.

月光从窗外照进来,落在琴键和姑娘的脸上,小屋安静得只剩下琴声。

琴声有时轻柔,像月光在水面上铺开;后来节奏渐渐有力,哥哥坐得更直,仿佛远处的海浪正向岸边涌来。姑娘没有看见月光,却听见音符之间的变化,双手安静地放在膝上,把注意全部留给音乐。

qín shēng yǒu shí qīng róu, xiàng yuè guāng zài shuǐ miàn shàng pū kāi; hòu lái jié zòu jiàn jiàn yǒu lì, gē ge zuò de gèng zhí, fǎng fú yuǎn chù de hǎi làng zhèng xiàng àn biān yǒng lái。 gū niáng méi yǒu kàn jiàn yuè guāng, què tīng jiàn yīn fú zhī jiān de biàn huà, shuāng shǒu ān jìng de fàng zài xī shàng, bǎ zhù yì quán bù liú gěi yīn yuè。

Gentle music suggests moonlight on water, then stronger rhythms suggest approaching waves. Although the girl cannot see the light, she follows the changing notes with her hands still on her lap.

哥哥仿佛看见月亮升出海面,海上先有轻柔的波纹,后来又卷起汹涌的浪涛。

gē ge fǎng fú kàn jiàn yuè liàng shēng chū hǎi miàn, hǎi shàng xiān yǒu qīng róu de bō wén, hòu lái yòu juǎn qǐ xiōng yǒng de làng tāo。

Her brother imagines the moon rising over the sea, first above gentle ripples and then surging waves.

演奏结束,兄妹俩仍沉浸在音乐里;贝多芬轻轻告别,沿着月光照亮的街道离开。

yǎn zòu jié shù, xiōng mèi liǎ réng chén jìn zài yīn yuè lǐ; bèi duō fēn qīng qīng gào bié, yán zhe yuè guāng zhào liàng de jiē dào lí kāi。

After the performance, the siblings remain absorbed as Beethoven says a quiet goodbye and leaves along the moonlit street.
