Place the sound further back
For g and k, the back of the tongue briefly meets the soft palate. Release into the final. k has a stronger puff than g; neither needs an extra vowel after the initial.
Let h flow
For h, let air pass through a narrow space toward the back of the mouth. Start gently; do not force or scrape your throat.
Keep the final and tone
Hear gē in gē ge, kǒu and hē. A correct initial is only one part of a syllable: the vowel and pitch still matter.
Syllables and words use the original course voice. Separate recordings are used only for simple, compound and nasal finals in the sound reference. For words, focus on the sound named on the card.
Record the two examples marked Practice 1 and Practice 2. Use the other examples whenever you want extra practice.
